Country Catfight (Reba McEntire and the Dixie Chicks)
By Jeannette Walls
Updated: 2:44 a.m. ET June 27, 2006

The war of words between Reba McEntire and the Dixie Chicks is heating up.
The red-haired country crooner says she’s “very disappointed” in the trio for comments they’ve made about the industry and about Bush.

Chicks band member Martie Maguire had told Time magazine the group prefers to attract fans who “will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith ... We don’t want those kinds of fans.”

“I’ve never turned my back on country music,” McEntire told the CMT network. “So when somebody talks bad about my music, my family, that does not set well with me. And when you bite the hand that feeds you, I just don’t think that’s very nice.”

Earlier in the year, she made a crack about how the Dixie Chicks “can sing with their foot in their mouth.” She recently added, “After they did come out in Time magazine and said that about Toby and me, I was very glad that I had . I was ready to say that because I hope they realize that they’re not doing themselves any favors.”

I hope Reba is prepping her 16-year old son Shelby for military service. After all, talk is cheap.

60. Neither one is "country"...but Pop Music.
There is no such thing as REAL COUNTRY music, its all pop and has been for years. HANK III sounds just like his grandfather Hank WIlliams senior. Hank Jr. never came close to being real country. Wayne Hancock is also another REAL COUNTRY singer and WANDA JACKSON is great too.. Real Country died with Johnny Cash, but HANK III is carrying the load very well.

Dixie Chicks are also more of a Folk band with some pop thrown in, reba tries to be Patsy Cline but it never worked out.

The DC's have all the right in this free country to say what ever the FUCK they want too, about anything! For Reba to try an slam the Chicks for their point of view which obviously differs from her own, is shallow. Someone just wants some attention...

I dont like Pop Country, but the Chicks can say whatever they want!!

"People should not fear its Government, the Governemt should fear its people."

Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 07:20 AM by Veronica.Franco
Her career is so DEAD that the only way she can draw attention to herself is by slandering other artists ... say it with music, Reba, or shut up ... she's just trying to save her ONE spot a year on the CMA Awards ... pathetic ...

Where Reba played the dedicated wife of the gun-toting survivalist nut played by Michael Gross of "Family Ties".
She always seemed intelligent before, but maybe that character was closer to reality than I thought.

9. Why is it always called a "catfight"...
Show me how this resembles two cats fighting in ANY WAY. I hate it when this word is used when two women have a disagreement. It's insulting and the fact that a woman wrote the article doesn't make it any less so--shame on her.

52. no, not really
You've heard the term "cathouse", maybe?

The bestialization of women comes first.

http://www.swadulted.com/workshops/eslcourse/essays.html

An article in Newsweek during the 1984 vice presidential campaign quoted a Reagan aide who called Ferraro ... "a nasty woman" who would "claw Ronald Reagan's eyes out." Never mind the nastiness of the remark and of the newsmagazine's using it to open its article. Applied to a man, nasty would be so tame as to seem harmless. Furthermore, men don't claw; they punch and sock, with correspondingly more forceful results. The verb claw both reflects and reinforces the stereotypical metaphor of women as cats. Each time someone uses an expression associated with this metaphor, it reinforces it, suggesting a general "cattiness" in women's character.
Cats are untrustworthy, self-absorbed and, er, slutty, as I understand it.

58. Oh my dear
How many women have you seen fighting? I'm too old now, but back in the day's when I indulged in that sort of thing I certainly wasn't "pawing" in the air.

In fact, men fighting don't exactly cover themselves in glory either, as I recall. End up rolling around on the ground a lot. What should we call that? Ferret fighting?

"shut up".

The Dixie Chicks should just ask Sony to be resigned out of their Nashville division into a mainstream music division. Afterall, the Chicks are much more popular than Reba is. Country is washed up.

And I to hope Reba is prepping her 16-year old son Shelby for military service. After all, talk is cheap.

After that fiasco, the Country community lost ANY chance of bringing me in as a fan. I was not raised a redneck, and I will never accept THEIR facist culture.

77. No, actually Reba is riding on the Chicks popularity right now.
This is just business to her. She probably wants to weasle her way into the Chicks' demographic and get herself some hipness cred, which will never, never happen. If she looked at their sales numbers (which I'm sure she has) she would know that the Dixie Chicks are doing fine and haven't bitten any hand that fed them. She drew first blood, and now she can reap the whirlwind for all I care.

18. Folks didn't like Johnny Cash in real time, either
When he stood up for working men and women, visited prisons, and so forth, there was a lot of low rumbling about Cash and his socialistic tendencies. Now that he's safely dead, everybody just loves them some Johnny Cash. Same thing goes for Woody Guthrie, and it will probably go for Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen as well. After the Dixie Chicks break up or die off, they'll be remembered with crocodile tears and a lot of fake sentiment from the same corporate tools who are dissing them now. The major difference will be that the corporate tools will at that time be making money off the Dixie Chicks' talent.

79. I seen Springsteen get dissed alot in classist terms.
It never ceases to amaze me how many times I've heard people say 'he can't sing' as if that, and not his writing, is the full scope of his talent. There is no one, and I mean NO ONE who can write like that man did in his early days. But because he's working class he's just some trite chump working man's hero who can't carry a tune and is barely literate. It sucks, but alot of people feel this way.

30. Loretta is not a fake.
Loretta's latest album, "Van Lear Rose," was produced by Jack White, NOT a Nashville guy. The Nashville Establishment wants to promote younger, cuter, less "country" artists. (Johnny Cash was also rejected by "mainstream" Nashville in his later years.) She's supposedly a Republican but has also supported Democrats. However, she's never made political music--except for Country Feminist tunes like "The Pill"--widely banned when it was released.

Oklahoma born Reba has, unfortunately, left most of her country roots behind. She did get good reviews in a Broadway revival of "Annie Get Your Gun"--but she's turned into a diva.

Asleep At The Wheel's great compilation "Ride with Bob" features Reba tearing up "Right or Wrong." (The Dixie Chicks also did a tune for the Bob Wills tribute.)

Reba--cut some real country tunes & fire your "writer"!

You called Ms Lynn a "fake" because of what you consider unladylike behavior. If she didn't call HERSELF the First Lady, then unladylike behavior would not make her "fake"--it would just make her unladylike.

Given your superior command of the English language, why did you select such a pedestrian word as "fake"?

And why would such an elevated & cultured person as yourself admit to knowing anything about Country Music?

Campaign Trail; Country Singers Stand By Their Man
By BERNARD WEINRAUB
LEAD: ''He will make a good President,'' exclaimed Loretta Lynn on Wednesday, moments after singing, ''I Saw the Light.''

''He will make a good President,'' exclaimed Loretta Lynn on Wednesday, moments after singing, ''I Saw the Light.''

Crowds welcoming Vice President Bush in central Illinois not only applauded his wit and wisdom, but also cheered even more enthusiastically as three of his surprise guests stepped on stage. The three sisters, the country and western singers Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue, did not disappoint.

As Mr. Bush and his entourage traveled by bus across the state, the singers stirred them - as well as audiences - with such other hymns as ''The Man from Galilee'' as well as ''Coal Miner's Daughter.''

At one stop, Miss Lynn said Mr. Dukakis was simply not her kind of politician. Thickening her Kentucky drawl, she added: ''Why, I can't even pronounce his name!'' The crowd roared with glee.

At another stop, the three sisters sang, ''Stand By Your Man.''

Their man - George Bush, a country and western aficionado -beamed.>>>

That's so hypocritical. She should share her wealth with the families of all those miners who died in Big Coal's mines thanks in large part to Bush's letting them get by with violating safety regs to increase profits.

51. Try Hank Williams III, and you might change your mind.
Great country music. And he hates Nashville.

54. The son of Hank Williams Jr, the ultimate FReeperista!
No thanks, I am staying as far away from redneck culture as I can.

That makes no sense at all. :eyes:

How am I an "ethno-bashing bigot"?

34. Some people would say breaking up a marriage isn't "very nice" either
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 01:59 PM by Justitia
but isn't that exactly what Reba did? Had a very public affair w/another woman's husband, completely humiliating the woman in the process? I believe that man is now her husband.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no moralist, but in the realm of all the "down-home, countrified, totally bullshit family values" crowd, I just don't see how Reba has any room to be criticizing anyone anywhere on the consequences of their actions. Particularly when it involves something like a political opinion - not the dissolution of a real family.

STFU Reba, your stupid country kitsch schtick is fucking annoying anyway.

41. Just remembered, her 1st husband was ALSO married w/kids when they hooked
up - Charlie Battles. He also dumped his first family for Reba. She stayed with him until her 2nd husband (one of her band members) left his wife and 3 kids for Reba too.

Yeah, Reba shouldn't be talking shit to ANYBODY about anything in her little Kountry Kristian Konservative world....

38. Reba McEntire always gave me the willies AND the heebie jeebies
You know how some people just inexplicably creep you out instantly? I had that with Reba. She fills me with revulsion, and I've never known why. This ain't helping, though.

about her politics. She reminds me of an extra from the movie "Deliverance".

If you take a picture of her every 2 years over the past 20 and look at the difference.

I also think she has elf shaped ears.

and now sulks for fame even if it means feeding off fellow country stars. Sad.

71. I hope Reba and her kind KEEP ON BASHING The Chicks!
All it's doing is keeping their names in the spotlight while they tour. You couldn't BUY this amount of publicity.

The Dixie Chicks are playing the Necks like a fine old fiddle!

80. i actually enjoyed Reba's show
because of the supporting cast. Since her comment, i have not watched a single episode. neither have many of my friends. i would rather go for a walk, stare at the wall, or watch a home improvement show instead.

81. Reba took some cheap shots at them during the CM Awards ....
She jumped on the RW bandwagon, and started hurling bullshit towards them without justification ....

It was unwarranted, and its equally unfortunate that the DC's took the bait and responded in kind ....
