Banned books must remain in school district for now, judge says (Miami)
A series of children's books banned this month by the Miami-Dade School Board must stay in the district -- and possibly in the schools -- until a federal judge holds a preliminary hearing in late July.

Copies of Vamos a Cuba and 23 other titles in the same series remain in school libraries, according to School Board attorney Luis Garcia. U.S. District Judge Alan Gold told the district today to keep possession of the books, saying he wanted to ''hold the status quo'' until a July 21 hearing, but he did not specify whether the books need to remain on shelves and accessible to students.

''One way or another, these books are going to remain here until I rule on this case,'' Gold said.

The months-long debate over the books began when the father of a Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary student complained Vamos a Cuba contained omissions and inaccuracies that left an unreasonably mild portrait of life under Fidel Castro.

1. The First Amendment doesn't mean too much in Miami.
The hardline right-wingers would approve of the Vamos a Cuba book claimed that the Cuban people are devastated that the brutal, murderous, completely crooked Mafia cohort Fulgencio Batista was still running Cuba with his death squads, and the elite right-wing racists hadn't sneaked off to Miami, and were back in place, just as it was in the early 1950's.

3. It appears the "Vamos a Cuba" book is one of a set of around 24
books, all travel books to different countries.

It's available at Amazon:
