Democrats courting Texans
Democrats courting Texans
State a battleground for Hispanics, presidential campaign cash

07/20/2003

By GROMER JEFFERS JR. / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Let the flirting begin.

Democrats who want to be president are increasing their visibility in Texas, looking to sway undecided voters like high school teacher Delia Perez and Paul Saldana, a public relations executive.

They heard separate appeals last week from Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group.

"I'm very impressed with both Kerry and Dean," said Ms. Perez, from Hidalgo County in South Texas. "Dean seems to be more to the left, and I like that. Mr. Kerry is very eloquent, and he's an excellent speaker."

Mr. Saldana agreed. "Dean did a good job of hitting the important points about what's going on and what the current administration is not doing, and Kerry did the same things as well."

1. maybe I'm just overly optimistic after today's protest,
but I really don't think that Texas is as unwinnable as a lot of you non-Texans think. People here are getting energized... and lots of us are PISSED.

Actually, I've met a large number of libertarians down here. Most of them voted for Bush before, but, because of Ashcroft, Patriot Act, and every other infringement of personal liberty the administration has done, these people are disgusted by Bush.

2. There are a lot of hispanics in the military that aren't to happy.
The economy in the toilet really hurts the migrant workers too.

But let's face it, who's counting the votes in Texas?

4. Are you asking who cares about the votes or about the mechanics of
voting?

6. I think she means mechanics
From what I hear, we're electronic, right?

(new here... since November)

We're way too important electorally for anyone to not care about the actual votes.

3. Loyal Tx. Democrats have paid a hard price by being written off in 2000.
I had to get Gore materials while I was visiting my daughter in California and I am a precinct chair. We would not have ever carried the state but by not seeming to care, the DNC really hurt the local candidiates. There were little or no tv ads for pres. and we had no counter to their constant derisions about "liberals". I am happy to see there are candidiates that seem to care.

7. Interesting, Dean has a Texas campaign office, Kerry doesn't...
Former state Rep. Glen Maxey of Austin, who is running Dr. Dean's efforts in Texas, said his candidate is "on fire."

"There's been a lot of attention to his new breed of activism," Mr. Maxey said.

Mr. Kerry has not opened a Texas office but has been bolstered by the endorsement of former San Antonio mayor Henry Cisneros. They appeared together at La Raza, and Mr. Cisneros urged Hispanics to support the Kerry campaign.

"He's doing very well," Mr. Cisneros said. "He knows the issues, and he speaks from the heart."

At least as long as I've been involved with the grassroots network, so that would be at least since March.
