China delegation visits North Korea amid turmoil
A Chinese leader visiting North Korea days after its missile tests defied international opinion said on Monday that Beijing stood by its Communist neighbor, adding to uncertainty about China's position in the standoff.

Vice Premier Hui Liangyu's "friendship delegation" arrived in Pyongyang earlier in the day for a six-day visit announced before North Korea last week test-fired seven missiles, one of them a long-range Taepodong-2 that fell into the sea moments after launch.

"The traditional friendship between China and North Korea has withstood the tests of history and its tribulations," Hui said in a speech in Pyongyang, according to Xinhua news agency. "China and North Korea adhere to friendship, mutual trust and cooperation."

Hui is accompanied by Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei, who oversees diplomacy with North Korea. A Japanese politician had said the Chinese team would convey Beijing's "grave view" of the missile tests, but the Xinhua report did not mention the issue.

1. OK......I'm willing to bet
China is endorsing North Korea on this. Just last week, China and Russia decided not to back sanctions against N. Korea. Japan is going through a meltdown over this.

I think China LOVES the fact that N. Korea is provocative, unpredictable. It's their Wild Child of Asia, and it takes a lot of heat off of Iran. China definitely likes that. They have good relations with Iran.....it's their #1 petroleum supplier.

Let's follow this story over the next few days. If China walks away happy with its 'friendship mission' or with no concessions, then we know this was a different deal altogether.

3. I think China is saying "don't bother calling for sanctions"

at the U.N. to the U.S. and U.K., as China will just use its veto. It is also telling Japan to cool down with the preemptive war talk.

On edit - There are some parallels that could be drawn with 1914, I suppose.

4. Reuters: UN resolution on hold while China talks to N Korea
UN resolution on hold while China talks to N Korea

Jul 10, 2006 — By Evelyn Leopold and Irwin Arieff

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - China indicated on Monday it might back a modified
U.N. Security Council resolution on North Korea's missile tests and the council
put off a vote on sanctions to allow for more regional diplomacy.

Japan had sought an immediate vote on the resolution but on Monday agreed
to first give a chance to diplomatic efforts by China. The council members agreed.

Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, expressing support for the fellow communist
state, began a six-day visit to Pyongyang that was scheduled before the North
Koreans set off an international uproar by test-firing seven missiles last week.
<snip>
Up to now, China has opposed sanctions on North Korea said it preferred to see
the U.N. Security Council issue a statement, condemning Yongyang's actions.
But on Monday it said a resolution might be acceptable.
