Baghdad to get 11 hours of power by end summer: US general
BAGHDAD (AFP) - Electricity supplies in the Iraqi capital should reach 11 hours a day, almost double the current amount, by the end of this summer, a US military official involved in reconstruction said.

"We think we can get Baghdad to about 11 hours of reliable power a day by the end of summer," said Major General William McCoy of the Army Corps of Engineers, involved in Iraq's reconstruction.

According to him, Baghdad currently receives six to eight hours of power a day, though residents of some neighborhoods insist the amount is much less.

The shortage of electricity supplies, especially in the blistering heat of Iraq's summer, has remained a major complaint of Baghdad residents since the April 2003 fall of the old regime.

During the time of Saddam Hussein, Baghdad had between 18 and 24 hours of reliable power a day, admitted McCoy, adding this came at the expense of the rest of the country which only had a few hours a day.

2. 4 hours per day in Baghdad according to Riverbend
(Who hasn't posted in over a month, by the way...)

Bad Day...

It’s been a horrible day. We woke up to unbearable heat. Our area averages about 4 hours electricity daily and the rest is generator electricity, which means we can use our ceiling fans, but there’s no way we can use air conditioners.

3. I'm sure they'll be dancing in the streets
if the lights stay on long enough for them to see to do so.

But this is what I like best:

"During the time of Saddam Hussein, Baghdad had between 18 and 24 hours of reliable power a day, admitted McCoy, adding this came at the expense of the rest of the country which only had a few hours a day.

The ratio has since been reversed, with the provinces on average now receiving 12 to 14 hours of power, said McCoy."

Oh, well that makes it all better then!

4. I can't help but simply sigh, how many times has this been promised
in the past three years and how many times have they fulfilled their promise. Answer to the first, many times, answer to the second, NONE.

7. 11 is NOT "almost double" 8

They can't even keep their bullshit straight.

8. The fact that they only get 8 hours now is deplorable
It's against the Geneva Conventions to target things like civilian access to power and water, I thought.

If we're the invading army why the hell haven't we restored total power to them. Oh silly me, part of New Orleans doesn't have power yet. Apparently, not a priority of the BFEE.

9. The Major General may do well to read these words of Robert Frost:
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it's queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there's some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

12. Just a thought, Mr. McCoy
But if you got the power on and kept it on, I'll bet that would do more to reduce the insurgency than all the efforts of the all the coalition troops combined.

But then, the military's job isn't "nation-building," which, as we all know, is for sissified wimps from elite eastern schools and swishy know-it-alls from the West Coast. Better to just put the beat-down on the population and keep beating them down, as force is the only thing these Iraqians understand.

17. What the media never reports, nor does anyone on DU
is that Bush won't replace the generator turbines that are needed BECAUSE IT IS MADE BY THE FRENCH AND HE FROZE THEM OUT OF RECONSTRUCTION!

Course he stole all that money anyway. $21 billion missing and he makes a signing that disallows the DoJ from investigating Pentagon fraud!
