Tornadoes touch down north of New York City

NEW YORK, July 12 (Reuters) - Tornadoes were reported to have touched down during a severe storm in Westchester County on Wednesday, just north of New York City, and in Connecticut, the National Weather Service said.

The agency issued a tornado warning for southern Westchester County just ahead of the evening rush hour. Other severe weather watches and warnings were also in effect throughout the metropolitan area.

Michael Wyllie, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said tornadoes were reported to have touched down in Westchester County and possibly Fairfield County in southern Connecticut. But confirmation of them would not come until the weather service could assess the damage, he added.

The National Weather Service reported winds of nearly 60 mph (96.5 kmh). Airports in the New York metropolitan area reported delays of up to 90 minutes as heavy rain and winds buffeted the area.

13. I think it happened last year.
I was very surprised at the time. Again, it was north of NYC, not in NYC.

If it wasn't last year, it was within the last few years.

16. Every state in the continental US has had tornadoes...
The shift of stoms change from south to north in mid summer..

This isn't 'strange' or a new thing. It happens every year.

Just not so close to New York city every year...

27. There was an F3 in Vancouver, WA
I think it was back in the 70s. A few years ago we had a rash of tornadoes, I think that was two summers ago. We get them, but they're usually really weak and do little or no damage.

22. Long Island in the 1970's...
In my home town there a Tornado ripped the roof off a local Carvel Ice Cream store. It was big news. We all thought tornados were a midwest thing. That was a heck of a storm.

2. That's kind of unusual for NY isn't it, we had 3 in Ohio
yesterday and 7 one day last week. We are 1/2 way through the summer weather and every time the rain clears out and we get a day or two of normal weather here come the storms. I'm certainly convinced of global warming, we have no winters anymore and the summers have gone from one extreme to the other either we have rain every day or a total drought.

6. I don't recall hearing of tornados in NY before
they are quite common here in the Midwest.

They had a rare tornado in Israel a couple of months ago. I keep thinking of the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" with its twin tornados in LA.

have had tornadoes in the past. They just don't happen with the frequency of other areas.

According to the NYC Office of Emergency Management, four tornadoes have been confirmed in New York City since 1960 with the last one being an F1 hitting Staten Island in 1995.

Historical data on tornadoes in NY State since 1950:

I wish I lived in a place where tornados are very rare, but the weather patterns are shifting.

...and more and more people out there, ordinary people who don't pay much attention to politics or science, are beginning to question why.

We at DU already know. Great educational opportunities coming up.

14. I was a bit worried this afternoon watching a cloud spin
I was sitting in the waiting room of my vet's, here in Fairfax County, VA, and one thunderstorm had already passed through, with another on the way. I could see some dark wisps of clouds, lower than the rest of the cloud ceiling that were doing a little circular dance in place over the town center. A few minutes later, they dissapated completely. Thought I was going to see a twister form.

21. NY State Tornado Stats 1950-1994 from NOAA

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/archive/tornadoes/st-trank.html

Seems this this isn't all that abnormal for NY. 249 tornado's from 1950-1994 makes NY the 30th ranked "state" out of 56. (US Terroritories are also included in this data)

23. Tornado in Windsor Locks CT in 1979, F4
Killed a few people and did alot of damage. Tornadoes hit every state in the union as far as I know; except conditions are not as favorable in AK & HI. But stay tuned, global warming may take care of that!!

I see a natural phenomena here where we are having weird weather every week, and hearing about other places in the World experiencing the same. Anyone who denies "Global Warming" is a fucking idiot or a paid RNC corporate hack.
