Nelson receives sole endorsement by Nebraska Right to Life

BY ROBYNN TYSVER

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Ben Nelson scored a big political coup Saturday. The Democratic senator, who is running for re-election, received the sole endorsement of Nebraska Right to Life.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson

In giving the exclusive nod to Nelson, the group followed its policy of rewarding incumbents who have worked on the front lines, said Denise Ashby, director of the group's political action committee.

Nelson is running against Republican Pete Ricketts, who has touted his anti-abortion credentials.

In making the endorsement, the anti-abortion group praised Nelson for voting for two U.S. Supreme Court judicial nominees - Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito Jr.

Nebraska Right to Life is a coveted political endorsement for anti-abortion candidates. The group has significant political heft in Nebraska.

2. better to be a Nebraska DINO than a NY or even Florida DINO.
It's just a conservative state, where a Teddy Kennedy or Barbara Boxer would have a tough time getting elected. Better have him than a Bush clone repug.

5. having grown up in NE
I know it's a conservative state. That doesn't make it any better. We've offered up good politicians in the past (like Bob Kerry).

I guess I'm not willing to settle for second best, despite the fact that NE will probably never field a progressive candidate like Boxer. :-(

3. Nelson has some of the highest approval ratings in the senate
His approval ratings from Democrats in NE are consistently in the 70s. It is one of the reasons I don't get my panties in a bunch about him, while I do get my panties in a bunch about Lieberman.

Forgot her name ... oh Priscilla Owen ...

And I remembered her name without having to edit.
