San Diego Union-Tribune: Dean speaks at conference; raps Bush on defense
Dean raps Bush on defense
Democratic chairman speaks at conference
By Philip J. LaVelle
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
July 16, 2006

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean accused President Bush last night of being weak on national defense and absent in the escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

In remarks at San Diego State University, Dean urged activists to fan across the nation – including deep into the heart of Republican-rich “red” states – to tell voters that Bush has failed as president – including in national defense, which Republicans tout as their core strength....

***

“You know, people say the Republicans are tough on defense. How can you be tough on defense if five years after 9/11, Osama bin Laden is still at large, the Iranians are about to get nuclear weapons, North Korea's quadrupled their nuclear weapons stash...."

***

Dean was the keynote speaker on the second day of a three-day conference called DemocracyFest, billed as part conference, part festival for progressive activists....

***

(Dean said,) “If you think what's going on in the Middle East today would be going on if the Democrats were in control, it wouldn't, because we would have worked day after day after day to make sure we didn't get where we are today. We would have had the moral authority that Bill Clinton had when he brought together the Northern Irish and the IRA, when he brought together the Israelis and the Palestinians.”...

1. I wish more of Deans speaches were available, to either watch or
listen to on TV or the net! I always enjoy listening to him, and he's been making more sense as time goes on!

2. I agree. And glad to see how he emphasized the bringing together of
people during the Clinton administration. This contrast should be a campaign issue! How to make it a fast soundbite now.

3. And I was there!
The speakers were excellent! We heard from Maxine Waters, Paul Hackett, and Mark M. of Air America, and, of course, the tremendously-motivating .... Howard Dean!

And, while I don't remember every word Howard said, I know that the U-T (whores for the RNC) only took a small part of his speech and threw it up there.

Howard was talking about a comprehensive Democratic plan for this nation, one that includes access to healthcare for every American and taking GENUINE steps for American security, such as monitoring incoming cargo.

I'm not liking how they are construing his highly-motivating speech, which really showed that he can motivate and be humorous at the same time.

I hope I'm expressing myself clearly. It was a fantastic night at DemFest at the Blowout Event:

Today's the last day of the festival; I was at the PDA for the last few days. My buddies will be attending the booth today.

6. I stuck around until about 5:30, then just was too hot and tired to
stay. I really wanted to see Howard Dean and the other folks at the night event, but I just kind of pooped out.

I really enjoyed DemocracyFest. Saturday was particularly good.

4. SD Union-Trib whoring for Bushenomics on the editorial page
The local real estate market has hit the skids, with lots of prices lowering and houses staying on the market for months. So the editors write a rosy "don't worry, the economy's fine so your house won't lose value" lead editorial in the same issue they report on Dean in the back pages.

Although the Union-Tribune reporting sometimes hits the mark (i.e. the Cunningham scandal), their editors always goosestep behind dear leader Bush. They'd feel right at home working in North Korea.

7. There's a reason the GOP noise machine has tried to turn Dean into
a cartoon: because more often than not, he says exactly what needs to be said about Bush and the Repubs. Most of the Democrats have been too afraid -- or too clueless -- to point out that plans for 9/11 were being finalized while Bush was literally sleeping on his hammock for an entire month down at his fake ranch. But all it takes is one weird Dean scream, repeat it over-and-over ad infinitum, and Dean is turned into a caricature.

8. It's good to read this.
And I would add: "The WTC towers would still be there, and thousands Americans, as well as tens of thousands Iraquis would not have died needlessly in order to fill the already full pockets of the Republicans' war-profiteering contributors, if the Democrats were in control." (Because I am convinced President Gore and his staff would have worked together on the string of warnings - including the 8/6/2001 PDB - that the lazy king george and his do-nothing staff willfully ignored.)

But that's another 'story.'
