NYT: Rice Says Israel May Need to Prolong Offensive
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/16/world/middleeast/16cnd-policy.html

WASHINGTON, July 16 — Israel may need to prolong its offensive in Lebanon to further reduce the threat from Hezbollah, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today, as some Democrats called on her to travel to the region immediately to help defuse the crisis.

Ms. Rice appeared to support a longer-term Israeli effort to inflict decisive damage to Hezbollah’s presence in Lebanon. She also said she was considering a trip to the region.

“A cessation of violence is crucial, but if that cessation of violence is hostage to Hezbollah’s next decision to launch missiles into Israel or Hamas’s next decision to abduct an Israeli citizen, then we will have gotten nowhere,” she said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Ms. Rice’s remarks appeared to put the United States at odds with most of its allies, which have urged an immediate halt to the far-flung Israeli strikes in Lebanon that followed attacks by Hezbollah militants in northern Israel.

1. And, since this conflict, I've been checking out CNN. You know, I don't
see Iraq mentioned now. There could be a real crackdown on the Iraqis and we'd never know about it.

Yes, that is sarcasm.

I don't know if the Bush administration was on board with the Israeli operation at the beginning, but they clearly are now.

8. It's to the advantage of the US in Iraq
A long war involving Israel might draw a number of foreign insurgents away from Iraq.

There's the added attraction, for the neo-cons at least, that since most of the insurgents would have to travel through Syria to reach the front line the US would be given an excuse to involve Syria in the "War on Terror®"

9. Why of course....
The killing must continue. We need to sell more guns, have more fear, a less stable world, high gasoline prices and the evening death toll on Faux News. Occasionally MS Rice will wring her hands and ask the Israelis to slow down a bit with Body-Count-O-Rama, but that will be about the most effort she will put into this whole thing.

My message to US media: you may think that by ignoring Arab victims that they will be forgotten. How wrong you are. If only you know how well we personalize and mourn our victims. If only you know Arabic you will see that we remember our victims, one by one, by name and face. If only you know.

24. "decision to abduct Israeli citizen?" What is this about? How about
If you mean that all soldiers are citizens then ok. But to imply that these were civilian abductions is just plain misleading. What about Israeli abductions of civilians from the Palesstinian territories and their assassinations within other countries?

28. Sounds to me like condi and junior are having too much fun in Russia
and she's not ready to leave the party. Wonder if they are playing "hide the blini" while Laura is touring the museums.

"Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright — speaking with unusual candor considering the traditional injunction in American politics against speaking ill of United States foreign policy while the president is abroad — said of the Bush administration, “I’m stunned, I’m frankly stunned that they have not been involved” more in the region.

“I wish that the secretary had announced that she was leaving St. Petersburg and going with other foreign ministers to the region to begin shuttle diplomacy,” she said on the ABC News program “This Week,” referring to Ms. Rice. “We can’t wait for the violence to stop."

30. Albright's got it right.
No matter what Condi's private views are, this is no way for a person with her responsibilities to be
talking.

And I can't believe the Bush went mountain-biking while all this was going on - if anything sends a
clear message that he hasn't a club, that was it.

29. why does the general public have such a positive opinion of this person?
Rice that is?
Her poll numbers always seem favorable is my impression?
No amount of wilful stupidity, ignorance or straight up callousness from this person, seem to have the effect of damaging her image.
