White House: Bush 'honor-bound' to block stem cells bill
Senate, House pass measure but lack votes to override veto

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush on Wednesday intends to make good on his threat to veto the embryonic stem cell research bill passed by the Senate on Tuesday, an administration official told CNN.

The veto will be his first in his five-plus years in office and is likely to come before a scheduled 2:15 p.m. event in which the president is expected to announce his decision, the official said.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said Bush considers himself "honor-bound" to block the bill.

"There's one kind of research, and that is that which involves the destruction of human life, that he does not think is appropriate for the federal government to finance," Snow told reporters before the vote. "He's been absolutely clear about it. There is no shading in it."

6. Exactly. This is just red meat to throw to the kool-aid drinkers.
In the meantime, typically, thousands will suffer needlessly because of the Moron-in-Chief.

2. Bush is rigid
stay the course type guy. He has no honor. He is an absolute knucklehead and I hope the congress can muster the votes to override his veto. Unfortunately we have a do nothing congress that is completely dysfunctional and may not be able to do the right thing.

The one thing Bush decides to actually stand behind, and surprise, surprise, it's a right-wing fundamentalist-only issue. Perhaps between this and Reed's defeat, the fundies will finally stop having a strangle-hold on the Republican party.

Edited for typo.

7. So by that logic he should push for a national ban on embryonic stem
cell research. Why is it ok for private industry to murder if the gov't cant. Somebody should ask that question.

But as usual the Repukes talk out of both sides of their mouths and stand for nothing. I sure would like to hear Tony Snow given that question, though.

9. Thank you Mr. Godly President!!!!!
Because of your and Karl's decision to throw a little red meat to your mouth breathing base, I wake up everyday in pain, and go through the day in pain, and probably will die in my 50's.

But you are a compassionate conservative. Come closer and let me give you a compassionate hug... with an anaconda.

20. Seems like a lot of political theater to me. After the elections, they'll
put another quarter in and try again, making it an easier bill to pass. It's a win-win the medical lobbyists get what they paid for in the end while Repukes and Bush "stand strong moral ground" for their fundie base. This shit is getting old. :eyes:

Opponents argue that other alternatives, such as adult stem cells, are available. Two companion bills -- one to promote alternative means of developing stem cell lines from sources such as placental blood and another to ban the commercial production of human fetal tissue, also known as "fetal farming" -- passed the Senate on 100-0 votes.

Tuesday evening, the House passed the "fetal farming" bill 425-0 but failed to pass the measure promoting alternative stem cells sources when backers failed to achieve the two-thirds majority House rules required to pass the bill. The vote on the alternative sources bill was 273-154.

A House GOP aide told CNN that the leadership would bring the bill funding research on alternative stem cell sources back to the House floor at another time under a different set of rules that only require only a simple majority to pass the measure.

...pretty well though, I'd say.

Beyond the joke, the stupid part is that stem cell research is about SAVING LIVES! It's also about improving lives of those that are injured by accident or disease.

Bush has got to be the biggest idiot on the planet. EVER.

24. honor, Honor HONOR?
When has he ever done anything honorable?

He takes such glee in using our hard earned taxpayer money for death. We have the highest deficit in my lifetime due to his and his supporters desire for death, not life.

Yesterday, my repug senator, Gordon Smith was on every local channel. My Dem senator, Ron Wyden was not even mentioned. Why, you might ask? Because the repug voted FOR embryonic stem cell research. Wyden voted for it as well, but he's a Dem.

referred to an embryo as a fetus at least once? Big difference. I'm sure they want to convey the message to the dimwitted sheeple that scientists intend to hack up babies for their parts.

The right wing pew jumpers have got George and Karl by the balls. Without the rapture crowd and the war mongers, their shit is in the wind. It's all Rove anyway. Why bring this up now, just before the mid terms? Throw a little meat to the fundies, approve it without the votes to over ride the veto and it LOOKS like you've actually done something. Like the 'immigration hearings'- appear to be doing something when you ain't doin' shit. Wait for it to die down and forget about it after November. The rest of the world will lead the way on stem cell and get the valuable patents. But we Americans can thump our bibles and let grandma die of diabetes and Alzheimer's.
