Lebanon 'has been torn to shreds'
19 July 2006

The Lebanese prime minister has called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah militants, saying his country "has been torn to shreds".

Fouad Siniora said more than 300 people had been killed and 500,000 others displaced in a week of Israeli attacks.

More than 60 civilians in Lebanon and two children in Israel were killed on Wednesday as violence continued.

Hezbollah denied Israeli claims that a bunker housing its leaders in south Beirut had been bombed overnight.

Israel said a wave of aircraft dropped 23 tonnes of explosives on a bunker in south Beirut where Hezbollah leaders, possibly including senior leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, where believed to hiding.

1. I heard the "bunker"
was actually a Mosque under construction. Damn! I guess if you lob enough bombs eventually you will hit what you want. right?

6. Here is a news article from Canada about that...
Israeli troops enter south Lebanon

Israeli troops have entered south Lebanon, stepping up an already fierce offensive, as warplanes targeted a building where top Hezbollah officials were thought to be located.

Hezbollah released a statement claiming none of its members were killed in the attack. The group also said the building, described as a bunker by Israeli officials, was actually a mosque under construction.

Several planes dropped 23 tonnes of explosives on the building, located in the Bourg al-Barajneh area of southern Beirut. Early reports suggested Sheik Hassan Nasrallah may have been caught in the attack.

(I heard on Paula Zahn that the Lebanese government also confirmed this but don't see that in the article.)

2. I find it interesting...
that of the 29 people Hezbollah has killed so far, only half of them are civilians. Of the 300+ Lebanese killed, how many were civilians? Almost every single one. How is it that Israel has worse aim with all its technology than Hezbollah??

3. I noticed the same thing.
Funny that terrorists are better at targeting military personel, while "legitimate" armies manage to slaughter a massively disproportionate number of civilians, while getting almost no actual combatants.

4. Why would "Hezbollah leaders" hide out in a place
that Israel was sure to bomb to dust?

Just asking.

5. If IDF said it was a bunker, it was probably shopping mall.
Those guys lie by habit.

BBC had the result of one IAF attack on a "mobile rocket launcher". The Israeli's blew up a village and damaged the "rocket launcher" (which was really a well drilling rig).

8. and yet.. CNN continues to report about the "precision"
of Israeli weapons and how "careful" they are in targeting..:(...while they also remark on the "haphazard" way that the Katushkas are fired...

It's really just the difference between guided munitions supplied by the US..and the "old school" weapons of the other side..

The land of the bible hosts a modern day David & Goliath passion play:(

9. Another example of "precision bombing"...
Srifa was a bustling hillside village. Then yesterday the Israeli jets came

Aliyah, 30, lay on a life support machine in the Jabal Amal hospital in a coma. She was one of a handful of survivors who made it out of Srifa, a village in south-east Lebanon. The man treating her put her chances of survival at less than 20%. "She has severe injuries and has lost a lot of blood," he said.

Fatima Ali Ashma was more fortunate, but not much more. She lay on a hospital bed struggling to breathe.

snip

The attack destroyed 15 houses, killed at least 17, and wounded at least 30. It happened on a day in which 63 people were killed in the bloodiest day of the Middle East conflict so far.

Srifa sits on a hillside overlooking a coastal plain that leads down to a sandy bay which ends with the white cliffs of Naqora and the border with Israel. It was a local beauty spot, where tourists came to see turtles lay their eggs. But it is also in the Hizbullah heartland from which rockets been fired into Israel
