‘Rice to play piano at meet’
‘Rice to play piano at meet’
7/26/2006 11:47:34 PM
- By AFP

Kuala Lumpur, July 26: The best-kept secret in global diplomacy is out — US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice will perform a piano recital at the annual gala of Asia’s top security meeting, diplomats and reports said.

The Asean Regional Forum this year has a heavy agenda with conflict raging in the West Asia, a missile crisis on the Korean peninsula, and fury over Burma’s refusal to embrace democratic reforms. But foreign ministers from the 26-nation grouping will have some light relief at the traditional gala dinner during which the world’s top diplomats put aside protocol and perform hilarious skits and musical routines. US secretaries have been particularly keen to poke fun at themselves, with Colin Powell belting out "YMCA" two years ago and Madeleine Albright donning bowler hat and tuxedo in a show-biz turn.

Ms Rice however — a trained pianist with a famously serious demeanour — is expected to perform a work from one of her favourite composers, who include Brahms and Shostakovich, the New Straits Times said.

She was supposed to be fluent in Russian, but we found out she wasn't. I hope she plays piano better than she speaks Russian. If not, maybe she can impress them by doing a double Salchow and a triple Axel.

Doesn't matter how serious or urgent the problem. Probably a good thing, too; my hunch is that as many problems have actually been solved in after-hours fraternizing as during actual talks at the negotiating table. We're primates, after all.

32. Will Bush massage her shoulders while she plays?
Will she murder Beethoven?

That's what happened to me. I was supposed to be a concert pianist. I could read music before I could read. And I started college as a music major. But around the end of my sophomore year, I started encountering prodigies, 12-year-olds who could play from sight what it had taken me all year to learn, and I thought, "I'm going to end up playing piano bar or teaching 13-year-olds to murder Beethoven or maybe playing at Nordstrom, but I'm not going to play Carnegie Hall." And I went to my parents and I decided that I had better find something else to do.

Leave it to this mob to find a way to kill someone who died 179 years ago...

I'd suspect that she'd tell everybody she was going to play the piano, walk up to the piano, sit down at the piano, start playing the piano... and then realize that she doesn't know how to play the piano.
