AP: Report: Military Closing Mountain Complex
Report: Military Closing Mountain Complex

The Associated Press
Friday, July 28, 2006; 4:49 AM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The military is virtually closing the secretive defense
complex carved into Cheyenne Mountain that for decades has monitored North American
skies for threats, a newspaper reported.

The Denver Post reported late Thursday that the North American Aerospace Defense
Command operations center will be moved to nearby Peterson Air Force Base, which is home
to the U.S. Northern Command created after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Adm. Tim Keating, who commands both NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command, said the
government's best intelligence "leads us to believe a missile attack from China or
Russia is very unlikely."

That, along with the emergence of varied terrorist threats such as suicide bombers,
"is what recommends to us that we don't need to maintain Cheyenne Mountain in a 24/7
status. We can put it on `warm standby,'" Keating told the newspaper.

2. Either
A. They're doing something stupid.

or

B. They're lying through their teeth and being stupid enough to think people are going to believe anything they say.

3. Based on the last 6 years...

...I'll have $50 on option A.

I could understand it 10 years ago, with the USSR gone and the thing presumably burning money to stay operational, but to do it when shrub seems to actively working towards WWIII smacks of utter stupidity.

Unless, of course, PNAC have something insidious planned, which wouldn't surprise me at all.

4. The Denver Post has the money quote.
One possibility: using the mountain as a second seat for the U.S. government in a crisis. Keating said he knew of no discussions on this, but he characterized that option as reasonable.

All those Focus on the Family employees will be very helpful in setting up the new government. Plus, they'll get first pick of the handmaids.

18. DING DING DING DING!!!!
We have a winner! That last paragraph screamed out to me, too. Are they preparing it for the October Surprise?

And with N. Korea gaining nuclear power....????

It sounds so strange....why spend $700 million to upgrade it and then decide to close it? I am so sick of seeing $ wasted for war. Damn it.

Think what $700 million could have done to help New Orleans?

f*cking assholes.

21. Maybe they could relocate evacuees in there
Think what $700 million could have done to help New Orleans?

Why not just move the people inside the mountain? Out of sight, out of mind.

9. This would seem to blow the need for a "Star Wars" missile system....
right out of the water. If they're really not concerned about a missile attack then there's absolutely NO need to go forward with their pet money wasting program, "Star Wars". This makes it a needless and frivolous program, right?

Oh wait, many of the companies doing research on "Star Wars" are in Red America, aren't they? Of COURSE they won't cut back on research money, the (R)'s could lose a few votes. Best to keep pumping money into this worthless program then. You never know when one of Saddam's fictitious nuclear tipped drones will fall into the wrong hands and blow Graceland off the map! :wow: Full speed ahead on, "Star Wars"!

14. Speaking of movie sets...
... they really ought to move NORAD to the set from War Games. It's WAY cooler than the real Cheyenne Mountain complex.
