Ex-WorldCom CEO Ebbers' conviction affirmed
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal appeals court in New York on Friday affirmed the conviction of former WorldCom Inc. Chief Executive Bernard Ebbers for orchestrating an $11 billion accounting fraud that led to the largest U.S. bankruptcy.

The ruling by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals may clear the way for Ebbers to begin serving his 25-year prison sentence.

Ebbers, 64, had been convicted by a jury in March 2005 of nine counts of conspiracy, securities fraud and other crimes that led to the telephone company's July 2002 bankruptcy. He had remained free on bail while pursuing his appeal. His sentence means he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

"I never thought his appeal was particularly strong," said Jonathan Turley, a law professor and white-collar crime expert at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. "There was a mountain of evidence against Ebbers, a pattern of corruption, so it would have been surprising if his appeal succeeded."

2. when is he actually going to jail?
because unless my eyes skidded over it, they didn't say, they said he's SUPPOSED to report immediately but it didn't sound as if he had

4. Nah. Just put him in jail with the general population.
Let him eat prison food. No special privileges.

He'd rather be dead.

6. There's a lot more corporate crooks out there than just Ebbers
Most of them won't ever be prosecuted. A disgrace.

10. Yes. It's sick, isn't it. All the oil and pharmaceutical barrons,...
,...who screw us ON PURPOSE,...will never see the the justice for their abuses.

If they did, this country would turn into the "America" we used to root for and believe in.

Doncha' think? I do.

8. He'll go to a "Country Club" prison.

A minimum security facilty set up for white collar criminals. And because of his age he'll be considered a low risk.

But I would not be surprised if he dies in prison.

11. Yes, but,...it's still isolation. The worst part will the punishment,...
,...his family and network suffers. Trust me on this,...I know.

Moreover, even the low-security prisons do body searches and restrict communications. For this guy, that will be hell. He'd NEVER survive a high-security prison,...be dead in no time,...most likely self-inflicted.

14. He donated to both sides
Here's the list of his political contributions.

Clinton, McCain, the Republican Senatorial Committee, the Democratic Party of Mississippi.

Typical corporate guy protecting himself either way.

they quoted Ebbers complaining about he thought that 25 years in jail was a little steep for a white collar crime. I nearly puked. This is almost a big of a joke as Kenneth Lay dying before he could begin to serve his "punishment".

Ironically, wouldn't it make more sense in America if financial crimes were the most highly punished? You know, since money is the only real god that Americans believe in?

13. Welcome to DU, Teach ..
FYI: I am one of the few, if not the only, DUer who knew Ken Lay. I worked for Ken, pre-Enron, as a Learjet and Lockheed JetStar pilot.

I have submitted here that Ken Lay knew George Bu$h as early as 1982. That was when I flew a trip from DCA to IAH with the young George Bu$h in my JetStar-II jump-seat. Bu$h sat in the jump seat for takeoff and landing. Otherwise, he was back in the galley for the 2.5 hour flight .. drinking liquor. With Ken Lay.
