Olmert expresses "deep sorrow" over Qana deaths
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed "deep sorrow" over the bombing of the southern Lebanese village of Qana on Sunday that killed at least 40 civilians, including 23 children, political sources said.

Olmert also ordered that humanitarian aid be allowed to reach the village.

"I would like to express my deep sorrow at the death of innocent civilians," the sources quoted Olmert as telling cabinet ministers.

"Nothing is more alien to our spirit, further from our thoughts, or more contrary to our interests, than hurting innocents."

how many more of these expressions of "deep sorrow" are we supposed to accept from these war criminals. They will reap what they have sown and so the cycle will continue.

21. Do you think they care one iota?
Just as bush and his disastrous "doctrine" have turned most of the world against us, Israel now feels empowered to do the very same thing. And they could care less about public opinion, just as the bushistas could care less. This pervasive "might makes right" attitude is wrong on so many levels it boggles the mind. Does anyone think Israel would have taken this heinous initiative on their own without bush first paving the way by "shocking and awing" Iraq? Not a chance. The "bush doctrine" has given Israel all the cover it needs to escalate the extermination of their "enemies", real or imagined. The chain of events bush and his neo-con buddies have started isn't even close to a resolution. Perpetual war.......it's our and the world's future, get used to it.

54. Israel has stopped firing, hasn't it?
Public opinion matters when a country like the US needs to drum up coalitions. Leaders that go against their constituents' wishes get canned. We've seen that happen in Spain, Italy, and soon, the UK.

The US and Israel are their own islands now. They repulse everyone else.

31. Israel has highly sophisticated equipment that allows them to
hone directly in on rocket launching sites, yet when asked if that equipment had located such a site at the Qana building, the responding Israeli soldier could not confirm that such a missile launching site had been found there.

It is easier to kill first and apologize later.

34. The UN observor said that there were NO Hezbolla fighters in the area.
The Istaelis said that they were targetting a building 30 meters away from the shelter for women and children, but of course, that did not hage any Hezbolla fighters either. There is no excuse, but Olmert will not stop the bombing. This is an illegal invasion and is full of war crimes.

he'd better get his damned military press rep off CNN International. The statements that guy made three hours ago, to all the world, expressed the opposite of what Olmert is now saying and also presented a fairly good case for prosecuting war crimes in the action taken against the village of Qana.

10. Olmert manages more compassion than many IDF apologist DUers!
Shocking. On the Qana thread, one wryly states: "They're shooting missiles out of Qana: what did these people think would happen?"

That many of the apologists have little concern for human life is now obvious. That they have less than Olmert himself is quite telling...

43. Convoluted?
My statements are clear and unequivocable; I want all parties involved to stop killing each other, I want Israel out of the Occupied Territories, I want religious extremists of all stripes and creeds to shut the hell up and let the adults talk for a change, and I want the international community to build Palestine into a stable nation next to a peaceful neighbor.

I enable nothing, sir. Both sides are murderous, and I won't support one over another.

"Hurting innocents" (hang on - don't you mean "killing innocents, Mr. Olmert?) is what Israel has been doing for over a month now. The only truth he's said is that it's contrary to Israel's interests.

39. Apology is empty. Israel had planned to do this
Israel had already warned it would do just this a few days ago:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5219360.stm

Mr Ramon - a close confidant of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert - said "everyone understands that a victory for Hezbollah is a victory for world terror".

He said that in order to prevent casualties among Israeli soldiers battling Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon, villages should be flattened by the Israeli air force before ground troops moved in.

He added that Israel had given the civilians of southern Lebanon ample time to quit the area and therefore anyone still remaining there could be considered a Hezbollah supporter.

"All those now in south Lebanon are terrorists who are related in some way to Hezbollah," Mr Ramon said.

Also, there was an article that quoted an Israeli soldier as saying that he didn't care about civilians being killed, because they ought to consider where they live next time.

44. I just watched these lizards all morning
One was even implying that Hezbollah killed those kids to create sympathy, or at least held them prisoner to die in a raid. That was the Israeli ambassador on Timmeh's show (Timmeh was actually doing his fucking job today, not just kissing fascist ass as is his wont). Shimon Peres was sobbing in his beer for the poor orphans, and they quoted a couple of others saying the same thing.

What none of them said was why that neighborhood was attacked. There were no Hezbollah installations there. It was a suburb, still under construction, and the building was unoccupied except the basement, which had been turned into a shelter for refugees.

These guys were all admitting that now the world REALLY hated Israel, but too bad, they'll do whatever they want to do. Revolting.

It almost makes Hezbollah look like good guys. And that's pretty bad.

45. Olmert can talk all he wants
But these words come with very little action. No desire for a cease-fire, no promise of being more careful, no submission to an investigation. Only a promise that humanitarian aid wold be allowed into that region.

Of course, saying that humanitarian aid would be allowed also imples that other areas are being denied aid. Does it not? Is denying aid consistent with the Geneva Conventions?

Until I see action, I will consider all rhetoric from US and Israel's leaders to be just that, rhetoric.

Talk is cheap. Please do something about it or be held responsible. At this point, no one else is responsible, that is for sure.
