(Colorado) Court rules parolees cannot vote
The Colorado Supreme Court ruled Monday that parolees cannot vote.

The ruling was the outgrowth of a lawsuit filed late last year by the American Civil Liberties Union.

...snip...

Colorado's constitution says inmates in prison are not allowed to vote, but the right is restored when the individual has "served out his full term of imprisonment."

The debate is over whether or not a person on parole is still considered imprisoned.

1. I wonder what harm is done by an ex-felon, parolee or not, voting.

2. All I see is the court ruled according to the law, however flawed the law
I'm not sure it's good public policy at all... and a lot of countries explicitly do NOT remove the right to vote from prisoners.

Even if it's a reading of the law as it was written, I'm not aware of any country, anywhere on earth, that denies the right to vote from parolees. There might be one, but I do not know of it.

3. I suspect the real reason is
they'd vote for the "wrong" party. *coughdemcough*

And some chickenshit Democrats go along not to be perceived as "soft on crime."

4. Here in Georgia your right to vote is not restored until
you have completed your entire sentence- paid the fines, completed parole, etc.

10. But is it automatic?
Or is the person required to jump through unreasonable hoops? (In hope they just give up, since voting is optional)

12. They have to re-register just like a newbie.
I don't think there is supposed to be any other requirements, but who knows what goes on during that registration approval process.

5. No harm is done in Australia by all of our felons having to vote.
Universal suffrage is something everyone who believes in democracy should be working for.

8. Now let's see if this gets implemented.
Florida admitted in court after the 2000 election that people were wrongly disenfranchised, and yet by 2004 nothing had been done to correct this. More people are getting purged, and the problem continues.

Court decisions only matter if they get implemented.
