McALLEN — Area law enforcement agencies will shift into high gear to provide security for one of the most important men on earth as soon as Air Force One’s wheels kiss the ground at McAllen Miller International Airport about 1:45 this afternoon.
"Presidential visits are the ultimate," said McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez of President Bush’s first visit to the Rio Grande Valley during his presidency. "There’s no other type of V.I.P. visit that comes close to a presidential visit."
The U.S. Secret Service is spearheading the security effort surrounding Bush’s speech in which he will outline his five-point immigration plan at Anzalduas County Park in Mission, but local officers are a crucial part of the plan.

The president’s route from the airport to Anzadulas Park has not been finalized. Or maybe it has, and the Secret Service is not letting the locals in on the exact details until right before the president arrives, said the sheriff.

I didn't know about this till today, and I'm stuck at home, unable to protest! :grr: :banghead:
On a related note, the "secret route" thing is a tempest in a teapot, really, as there's only one direct route between the airport and the park that doesn't involve going out of the way to the expressway or through dense neighborhoods. So if anyone from McAllen/Mission is reading, protest on Business Hwy (US) 83!
