Marine who lost arm, leg in Iraq mugged outside Washington
It's another bit of bad luck for a Marine who lost an arm and a leg in Iraq.

Lance Corporal Mark Beyers was mugged and robbed outside a restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland, last month.

The Marine from western New York was dining out with his wife, Denise, while finishing up rehabilitation at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

As they left the restaurant, five men approached them and asked for a cigarette. Denise Beyers tells The Buffalo News they gave the men a cigarette -- but the men grabbed her purse, kicked her and knocked the couple to the ground. The thieves made off with 500 dollars just wired to them by a relative.

3. This is just amazing.
What could possibly be going though people's when they do shit like this?

And if Mr and Mrs Beyers were only carrying money that had just been wired to them then obviously it wasn't money they needed to survive. I hope they are getting help.

17. Or maybe...
...they're just people with no opportunities in life who've learned from our political "leaders" -- ever since Ford pardoned Nixon -- that the law is a fucking joke. If our "leaders" ignore the law, why shouldn't everyone else?

23. Mayberry needed a sheriff AND a deputy because Andy was a single parent.
And all of that "Aunt Bea" nonsense - very strange relationships in that household. Andy had to be watched.

Maybe not the best idea to have Barney be the guy, but at least someone was keeping an eye on that weirdo Sheriff Taylor.

24. You have to understand
that "people with no opportunities" were not allowed to go to school, not allowed to apply for any jobs, and not allowed to leave their present locations for a place that would provide an education and/or job. In fact, if they were the only people on the planet, they would probably starve to death because they are utterly incapable of any effort beyond robbing an amputee. Shame on you for not being more understanding.

27. exactly...
i hear the ratwingers whining about society going to hell and they always mention bill clinton, but clinton never stole or plotted to defraud entire communities, which the busheveki do all the time; these asses talk about 'law'n' order' when its the corporate pig who breaks the law routinely.....when we were kids, the 'authoritahs' went outta their way to preserve the image that the big top men were honourable, even when they were cheap punks (see joe macarthy), and the reason was, when pundits were confronted with the truth, was that respect for the law, and the lawmaker, was paramount importance regardless of incidental transgressions by temprary officeholders (see the billy sol estes case etc)....the very office of the president had 'inherent dignity' that made criticisng the man a carefully worked out process. UNTIL bush has changed that, (esp after the busheviks tried to destroy clinton regardless of the 'dignity' of his office!)

34. Really?
I'm in Columbia Heights (which is having its own little crime wave right now) and I'm hearing a lot of "static" from all over MD; it's not just PG county with problems anymore. I've heard of people getting mugged in Silver Spring, Bethesda, and Rockville.

41. People have always gotten mugged in Silver Spring. This mugging...
was at Friendship Heights, which is about a mile south of Bethesda/Chevy Chase.

It was not far from where the recently-retired NYT reporter was killed while out walking at night.

9. "another bit of bad luck "?
So loosing an arm and leg was the first bit and being robbed of $500 is the second bit?

Sounds rather condescending to me.

19. I wrote the station about that:

"It's another bit of bad luck for a Marine who lost an arm and a leg in Iraq.

Lance Corporal Mark Beyers was mugged and robbed outside a restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland, last month."

http://www.whbf.com/Global/story.asp?S=5236282&nav=0zGo

Corporal Beyers loss of his arm and leg in Iraq is "a bit of bad luck."? Did I read that correctly? Did one of your staff just refer to the maiming of a combat soldier as "a bit of bad luck."?

Losing your car keys is "a bit of bad luck." Getting to the store just as it's closing is "a bit of bad luck." Serious combat-related injuries are quite a bit more.

37. Oh my god. I've never seen such graphic pictures in my life.
I clicked on a couple of the (what I thought were) headlines. The first one brought up a picture of a guy laying on the street with his brains oozing out of his head. The second one I tried was a guy drinking pee from a monkey.

That definitely took me by surprise. I have no idea how the photographers can do it sometimes. Though, come to think of it, when I watched the Jack-ass movie it did seem like at one point the photographer was actually vomitting while he was filming them doing something gross.

You must have a stomach of steel.

39. very well known site that has been around forever
A !WARNING! would have definitely been appropriate.

Rotten is a well known site that has been around forever. I have not been to Rotten in years and I was pleasantly surprised to see political content. I only posted a link to a specific article. There was nothing more disgusting in the link that I posted than the Bush dog poop sticks. These have been posted here many times. Regardless, I probably would have self deleted if I had not posted it immediately before going out.

I do not have a stomach of steel. There are many Rotten links there that I would not click on.

Rotten is extreme but not really mean spirited.

18. The people who did this should just die and get out of the gene pool.
Anyone who would mug another person is pretty bad to begin with, but to do this to a disabled guy who very obviously has it worse than the muggers themselves, is a disgrace.

Hopefully karma will deal with them swiftly. What pigs.

38. I really don't know on either question
It baffles the mind why they would ever do such a thing. I know that they are building a new facility in Texas that I believe is for vets who have had amputations or spinal injuries. They underfunded the project and looked to the private sector for donations, they took to begging on the Imus show for donations. None of it makes any sense, but it does piss me off. :grr:

33. DC and MD/VA aren't doing too well right now
I know it's always bad in the summer, but having first moved to DC in '99 I've never seen it like this before. People are tense, and you can't just walk alone in the evening anymore. I first moved here in '99 and the first time I ever got mugged was this year. PG County is like a second Anacostia, and Montgomery County is getting there. Something's going on here. I don't know if it's something in the water, rising housing prices, gentrification, or what... but it's a lot more dangerous town than it was 5 years ago.
