Terror 'may force freedom curbs'
The UK might have to modify its freedoms in the short term in order to prevent their "misuse and abuse" by terrorists, John Reid has said.

He conceded that was never an easy request, but it was up to everyone to ask: "What price our security, at what cost can we preserve our freedoms?"

The UK faced its "most sustained period of severe threat since the end of World War II", the home secretary warned.

He urged people from all communities to help by being vigilant.

Right on cue. Didn't take long to tip their hand.

1. The Brits are a much braver people than we
They won't buy this; the Parliament rejected Blair's "terror laws" before and they'll reject again.

Churchill himself said in times of crisis that liberty is the most important thing. The Brits aren't like us; they won't hand away their freedom

8. They aren't any braver.
They're just a bit more used to this kind of action than Americans, and thus it comes as less of a surprise.

3. Here it is folks. The reason for the play up of this failed
(if it existed at all) terror threat.

Gotta take away them freedoms from the US and Britain that we're trying to damn hard to shove down the throats of the Iraqi people (so they say).

15. That's about what Kudlow just said
Only he wasn't joking. Geez, if we didn't have to deal with that pesky Constitution the terrorists couldn't get us.

4. Security is an illusion
it's not worth giving up your freedom for.

If someone really wants to kill you. All the security in the world won't do you much good. No less the bogus security that our government provides for us.

13. Exactly!!!
You simply CANNOT protect all people all the time from all danger.

The best policy is to have as many friends as possible and keep your enemies to a minimum.

I wonder how many sit in fear of islamic terrorists and drive to the local convenience store only to have their throat cut for their car.

As far as homeland security, there isnt a bigger oxymoron anywhere. Just another way to funnel cash to their supporters.

Oh but dont worry, our great political leaders were never in any danger, phewww.

9. What the fuck do these people know about freedoms?
The 'terrorists' have so won! Instill fear, check. Make people hate their govts, check. Turn once Democratic societies into soft-porn dictatorships, check. Divide the citizens and make paranoia run rampant, check.

Yup, really beating up on those 'terrorists'. :eyes:

10. Because...
Today's events prove that the police and intelligence services cannot stop potential terror plots?

Surely the fact that there have been no planes destroyed and there are 18 people in police custody prove that the current laws are quite capable of dealing with terror plots.

17. perspective on terrorism: 56,000 killed on highways in US every year
is anyone going to ban automobiles??? They kill a far larger number of people than all the "terrorists" together. No. So to the hosers that want to take away civil rights: stuff it.
