US forces repel Afghan rebels' raid on American base
US soldiers and warplanes drove off an insurgent attack on a new American base early yesterday, reportedly killing 19 militants in an area where rebels are trying to resist a push by coalition troops into remote mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

In the volatile south of the country, wracked by the bloodiest fighting in nearly five years, suspected Taliban rebels hanged a 70-year-old woman and her son from a tree, accusing them of spying for President Hamid Karzai's government, officials said.

Meanwhile, Karzai, whose popularity has declined because of poor security and slow progress in reconstructing the war-battered country, signaled in an interview that he won't seek reelection in elections slated for 2009.

The raid on the US base at Kamdesh in the eastern province of Nuristan -- one of the country's wildest regions -- was staged by extremists probably belonging to the Hezb-e-Islami militant group, who attacked from three directions out of forests using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire, the US military said.

This sounds like insurgetns are on offense in stead of running for cover.

2. The irony is that the Soviets fought the same guy 20 years ago.

And we helped him back then!

Anyone remember what OBLs original beef was with America (I know, some of you lurking freepers are wondering what OBL stands for)? It was back in Poppy Bush's day. He didn't want America using Saudi Arabia as a military base. I guess he was too stupid to realize that it not how monarchies work. In a monarchy, the King gets to say what will and won't happen. Poppy got his military build up after GWI, OBL gets mad and has someone try to blow up the WTC (first time).

Fortunately Bill Clinton is in charge and they catch the guy and lock his ass in prison (take notes Repukes, we got the bastard). Still the first attack was huge, killed 6 people and injured 100s. :( Maybe someone should have started paying attention then? They were the Twin Towers, after all. Not some mobile amusement park. An American landmark. Guess we were to busy trying to figure out what went wrong with Waco.

And what are we building in Iraq? The biggest Embassy on the planet. A Citadel by the Tigris. So when they attack it in the future, will Halliburton have a no-bid to repair it? Sounds like a win win for defense contractors.

for having been "vanquished" by us. Must be a desperation attack by militants in their last throes. Old school Russians must be laughing their asses off.

5. Anyone with a sense of history (incl. old-school Russians) is laughing
his ass off. But it's a bitter laughter, because we understand how much suffering there is as a result of NeoCons'
