New TSA Carry-On Baggage Rules
Flying? New TSA Carry-On Baggage Rules

<edit.. I personally thing that the "plot" is a fuckin lie to keep us frightned>

http://channels.isp.netscape.com/whatsnew/default.jsp?story=20060810-1252

If you're flying soon, the rules concerning what you may and may not carry onto the plane with you just changed in response to the arrest in the United Kingdom of people accused of plotting to destroy aircraft bound from England to the United States by exploding liquids in their carry-on bags.
Find out the details of this thwarted terrorist plot.

Effective Thursday, Aug. 10, travelers are no longer allowed to bring the following items on board the airliner:
--All liquids of any kind, including drinks
--Gels
--Lotions and creams, including hand lotion and sunscreen
--Contacts may be brought on board in their cases, but the cases cannot contain liquid.
--Hairspray
--Toothpaste
--Shampoo and conditioner
--Liquid makeup
--Perfume
--Anything else that has a liquid or gel-like consistency.

Higher security means long lines and chaos in airports nationwide.

If you bring any of these items through airport security, TSA agents will confiscate them from your carry-on luggage; however, you may still place them in checked luggage. Some exceptions are granted for passengers traveling with an infant or small child. Baby formula, juice, bottled breast milk and baby food are allowed, but they will be tested by the TSA to ensure they are not explosives. Prescription drugs, insulin and some nonprescription medication are also allowed with proper identification. The new procedures cover all flights, both international and domestic. Currently, laptop computers, cell phones and other electronic devices are allowed, but that is subject to change.

41. Totally. Maybe not contacts either-they could be of plastic explosives!
so that tiny amount of liquid could be dangerous, by their idiotic thinking? What if this material what ever it is to be able to be dangerous at such small volumes could be kept under the tongue in a small vial? Is anyone in any public or leader capacity questioning this? Pure insanity.

55. Unbelievable
You cannot put contact lenses in a case without solution to keep them moist. They will dry up and be ruined. I fail to understand how a minute amount of liquid could even be dangerous anyway. Overreaction is the word of the day.

This isn't exactly crying WolF! or The sky is falling! What, exactly, is it? Aside from a sleight of hand practiced by a fascist government which wishes to be perceived as both strong and benevolent.

80. Thank you for your concern. Welcome to DU.
So how many thousands of people missed flights and lost property like expensive and beloved perfumes (you dump my Must de Cartier over my cold dead corpse) because of this hysteria? The plot was foiled at the beginning of the week, but security measures were only demanded NOW? So they left us in danger for how long?

THERE WAS NO DANGER. The plot was foiled. The chemicals were never purchased. The plane tickets were never bought. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THIS DISPLAY OF MILITARISTIC HYSTERIA. Everyone could have flown in complete comfort and safety. They wanted to panic us.

But I lived thru 9/11 in Lower Manhattan and I already know what happens when terror strikes: if you live, you go on living. Panic is pointless and ridiculous. There's too much to do. This was a display of useless official panic. NOBODY was safer for it.

7. What about those that have prescription eye drops ....
Whether for glaucoma, infection, or severe dry eye... these are not a "nicety."

As for me, I can not wear glasses and would be essentially blind without contacts... There is no way I could go coast to coast without artificial tears or some solution. Otherwise, I would likely develop keratitis and corneal ulcerations--both which could cause a permanent loss of sight if not treated.

This is just insane...

Those who have some of these conditions likely have to apply drops several times throughout the day and even more often, given the dry conditions of an aircraft cabin.

i agree, the people saying "check it" must not fly w. any real health issues that requires hydration

let's see, they are saying get in line for security 3 hours early -- that's already 3 hours of waiting w.out your stuff -- then there is boarding the plane, then there are possible delays, but even an on time transatlantic flight i don't think the flight itself is ever less than 6 hours and often much more

they're worried about being w.out a durn ipod, don't seem to realize your concern is preserving your EYESIGHT!

52. I read on the United Airlines website that Insulin and other prescriptions
can go on as long as they are in their original container and the prescription matches the name on the passenger ticket. It is, however, subject to being checked out. But over the counter eye drops...I would think they would have to be checked or tossed.

5. The airlines better provide bottled water on board
and as soon as you board, in case you end up waiting an hour to take off. If anyone in authority had taken time to THINK before acting, they'd realize there's no reason why people can't buy bottled beverages IN the airport, after they've gone through security.

I'll have to start checking my luggage - means another 45 minutes in the airport waiting for it to show up on the luggage carousel. Glad I bought those new combination locks approved by TSA. That way, if anything's stolen, TSA can't blame it on the airline/airport handlers.

Of course there's a reason. How hard do you suppose it would
be to subborn the guy who drives the Pepsi delivery truck and,
if necessary, the minimum-wage cashier at Hudson News?

It would be pathetically easy to get special containers of
"Mountain Dew Code Red" onto the plane using that method.

15. Prescription Drugs / Insulin
Ok you need to allow prescription drugs and insulin but did these geniuses bother to think about this? Terrorist organizations seem to have no problem traveling the world, buying bombs, missles etc. Do they think they couldn't buy a pharmacist? So you ban everything but this, gee I wonder what they'll try next? I mean seriously this is as dumb as the shoe thing, after the shoe incident I joked that whats to stop a terroist from trying the belt bomb or the bra bomb?

The people who make up these rules define the term "Close the barn door after the horse gets out".

25. Insulin?
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 01:27 PM by KansDem
I flew recently and took my insulin with me on board. I didn't want to take the chance that my luggage might not arrive at my destination, as that would mean I wouldn't have my insulin when I landed with no idea when it would arrive.

So what am I to do on future flights if this draconian measure is adopted by US airlines? After all, insulin looks a lot like nitroglycerin.

on edit: Sorry, I didn't see post no. 15 and its responses, but still this is a concern for me for the reasons stated.

You've identified the basic problem.

NO MATTER HOW CLOSELY YOU SCREEN, a creative
person who is willing to give up their life can always
think of ways to attack an open society. For example,
thousands of women board planes every day carrying
several kilograms of liquid or gel carefully concealed
within their bodies.

The trick is to get fewer people to hate us, but we're
moving rapidly in the opposite direction these days.

148. I was thinking about this today. My husband has to fly about
ten hours from central US to London in a few weeks. I was thinking about "What would I do if I was in his place?" and coming up with ways that I believe I could successfully board small amounts of stuff in very small, thin plastic tubes sewn into clothing.

I don't think I could manage with these rules if I was still flying with contact lenses.

37. This is positively insane.
No liquid allowed in carry-on luggage? Okay....
Detonated with iPods? Okay....

Let's just assume for a moment that this makes any logical sense at all. (Actually, if anyone can tell me the physics of just how something like this could possibly work, please let me know. It sounds awfully made-up to me.)

Anyway, let's say it's a real threat. Why does putting said liquid in checked-in bags make any difference? If someone planned to detonate one of these bottles or containers using an electronic device as what I can only assume would be a remote-control detonator, why does it matter whether the explosive is in the cargo hold or in the cabin? Wouldn't the remote still work?

This whole thing just smacks of something to induce more paranoia.

Do I doubt there was a foiled terrorist plot? Not really. But I really don't buy the whole "liquid explosive detonated with an iPod" story either.

Just another story to make us all a little more crazy.

47. The Truth, banning all carry ons is only way to make planes secure
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 02:26 PM by jseankil
Rig up a laptop that replaces the liquid in its cooling system if you want to get some kind of explosive liquid on a plane, replace the ink from a pen with a poison, the list goes on and on what you can do hence the need to A. ban all carry ons or B. Install detection machines that everything has to go through. Banning all items could actually help airlines who could then rent out inspected items on the plane, from laptops to contact solutions.

Unfortantly detection machines are a must even if carryons are banned as there is more than 1 tunnel to the rabbit.

and all electronic devices.

--snippets--

Bomb experts and troubleshooters for airline security interviewed by The Associated Press said mobile phones, computers, wrist watches or anything else with a battery should be prohibited from flights.

The threat first appeared in January 1995 in the Philippines, when police stumbled on a suspected al-Qaida plot to target U.S.-bound planes with bombs based on nitroglycerine carried on board in containers for contact lens solution.

Even then, baby formula was excluded from the ban — even though, in powdered form, it can provide a good vehicle for masking crystallized explosives.

Hatcher said “liquid bombs” were not the most likely explosive. He said it was far more likely a terror cell would try to smuggle on an explosive in crystalline or powder form and to combine it with an acid-based compound.

The answer to most of this is a sleeping pill that lasts as long as the trip. No kidding. Take a sleeping pill when you board and sleep until it is over.

79. Amtrak is cool
But I've looked into it - there is only one train a day, and there is a transfer in Chicago. All my time is billed at $115/hr to clients, and my projects have fixed budgets. If a round trip takes an extra 10 hours, my budget loses $1150, plus the cost of the fare. Although, if I could work on the train, the time would not be wasted. What America needs is a high speed train service that links the major cities.

My significant other and I took Amtrak from Milwaukee to Seattle 8 years back - the Empire Builder. We got a deal through one of the airlines, price wasn't too bad. Train out - plane back. We had a sleeper - the ability to get privacy, and a daily shower, was priceless. Train travel is wonderful, unlike a plane, the vacation starts the moment you climb aboard. This was my favorite vacation in my 42 years.

115. Train out-plane back is an excellent trip!
I took my 14 year old daughter out to Seattle this spring on the Empire Builder and we flew back to Minneapolis. As you know, when you get a sleeper you also get meals. Great meals! My daughter's ticket was half price and I think with her 3-4 meals it was a true bargain.

There are so many good things about train travel. It's sad that the Repubs are out to kill Amtrak and keep it operating on a shoestring.

With all the problems we have with energy and highway upkeep it doesn't make sense that a big country like the US doesn't have a highly functioning multi-purpose train system.

My typical trip start with going to work in the morning, working until 1:00pm or so (as late as 5:00, if time allows), and then traveling. Budgets typically do not cover travel time :(.

If I am lucky, I will get to the next day's destination before 10:00pm, although midnight or later is not uncommon. Whatever, the nest morning the alarm clock will ring at 6:30 am or so. Checking baggage means an hour or so less sleep for the night. There's no time, go, go, go.

120. You're assuming there will still be carry-ons
Travelers who want to take their own shampoos, etc., may put them in their luggage. They just can't bring anything liquid on the plane with them. In fact, from what I'm seeing, they can't bring hardly ANYTHING on the plane with them.

No carry-on luggage
No drinks
No food
No make-up (which can be made with glycerin which can be extracted to make bombs???)
No lotions, soaps, shampoos
No electronic devices, including laptops, MP3 players, cell phones.
No reading material (????)

Only cash, tickets, ID papers, etc., that would normally fit ina wallet and/or picket, meaning no purses, folks. All items must be carried in a clear plastic bag.

All it's going to take is a few SNAFUs to make air travel a total and ongoing nightmare. Use your imagination ----

1. A flight from JFK to LAX with a stop at O'Hare arrives late, too late for some passengers to catch a connecting flight to Minneapolis. Their cell phones are in their checked luggage. There are insufficient public phones for passengers to make arrangements. You think there aren't going to be some angry and frustrated folks, including hte airport and airline personnel who have to deal with them?

2. One piece of lost luggage that monumentally ruins a business trip or a family vacation. Many people -- as we all know -- keep the essentials in that carry-on, so that if another piece of luggage is lost, at least the trip isn't a disaster while the missing suitcase is located. (This happened to me on a trip to Hawaii several years ago. Thank goodness for those carry-ons!)

3. Claims for stolen items.

4. Complaints from the business community when their workers (other than the corporate-jet-flying CEOs) can't get any work done during that four-hour flight to and from wherever. And then the higher billing for time when consultants lose that time, too. "Yes, sir, I billed you for twenty hours, even though I only spent twelve hours on the job. The other eight was travel time during which I couldn't do a damn thing. If I had had those eight hours to do some work, I would only have needed to bill you for four hours. Oh, well, we're safer, aren't we? Pay up." And when government laptops start disappearing from checked baggage. . . . . . . . . . . . .

5. The effects of nervous, frightened, uncomfortable passengers on the flight crew and on other passengers. A crying baby who can't be consoled with Cheerios or a toy. A bored woman who talks incessantly to her seatmates because she has no book to read. A disgruntled teen-ager who has to stare at a stupid movie rather than relax with her iPod.

When -- indeed, if --- people stop flying because of this bullshit, the airlines may put some pressure. Until they doo, nothing is likely to happen.

I'm heading to Chicago in a few weeks for a class reunion and to visit my family. If I hadn't already bought the tickets, I'd have driven instead, and yeah, it's a 24-hour drive. I won't fly again until this absurd nonsense stops. I can't take drops for my eyes, but only 10% of the checked baggage is screened? ARE THEY CRAZY??????????????

Never mind, don't answer that. Of course they're crazy.

I can't afford to have things stolen out of my checked luggage. That's why I've always taken valuables -- mostly jewelery -- with me. I've had luggage lost -- that's why I carry essentials in my carry-on. So I'll be flying blind this trip -- I can't wear glasses and can't risk wearing contacts with no solution, so if you see a funky old lady wandering around O'Hare, squinting to read the signs, it might be me looking for the baggage claim so I can unpack my eyes. Help her out, okay?

Tansy Gold, writing this before she's put her eyes in for the day and not sure about any typos. . . . . . .

still allowed, but apparently liquids and gels aren't.

My husband travels a lot and never checks a bag. He doesn't trust the airlines to return it to him in one piece with contents intact. As long as he's allowed to carry on, he will. And if he has to travel toothpasteless, he'll stop at a drugstore on landing and buy some. As will many others.

82. This Won't Last
The people that sell liquor and perfume in duty-free stores inside of the security perimeters of airports will complain that they're losing business. Then, magically, the terra alert will lessen.

I wonder, though... when I was flying to and from London, they were peddling duty-free booze and perfume on the plane. (This was United.) I guess that'll be stopped, too?

119. I've been reading in various threads that you can't bring
reading material on planes, now. Is that true? Can you point me to the thread that talks about that?

I will go furkin banana nutz without a book on a plane. It's the ONLY time I get to read something not related to work.

Not that I fly all that much, but still.

126. I've heard different things
Supposedly flights within the US don't ban reading materials, although international flights do. BUT -- my Dad flew from Charlotte to Logan yesterday on US Air, and they took his new hardback and his bagel at the gate. He is tres pissed.

BO WAY I could get through a flight without reading material... plus gate waits.

Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 10:33 PM by confrontationclaws
with my family. We got some McD's on the concourse to carry on the plane...

All our carry-on stuff was searched, including the Macdonalds bag...ketchup packets (Heinz) and salad dressing packet were confiscated, although we were told if my wife wanted to step out of line and put the salad dressing on the salad she would be allowed to bring the dressing into the cabin that way. We weren't told whether or not applying the ketchup to the fries and McNuggets would be allowed, though. Seriously. God I feel safe.

97. So this is what it's come to...
First the airlines pretty much stop serving food, forcing people into the Mickey D's on the concourse. So the hungry traveller purchases a salad, mcnuggets and fries and then can't take the little sealed packets of dressing and ketchup on the plane because they are going to cause an explosion? The only explosion caused by McDonald's food is created in the digestive track of the eater. This is what I'd expect to see in The Onion or in a Scary Movie bit. Whoever came up with these new directives has completely lost it and is in serious need of help. How long before the public says, "Enough's enough" and refuses to fly. Bringing the system to its knees is the only way these idiots will wake up.

I'm all for "smart" security, but apparently the US isn't capable of it.

they'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands:) I do NOT fly without a book to read. Once again, the terrorists have won. They don't have to do a damned thing and it throws our country in a tizzy. If we had real security than this type of window dressing to make us feel safe wouldn't be necessary.

P.S. What if it's a library book?

If US intelligence knew about this plot BEFORE today, why didn't they put restrictions on liquids BEFORE today?

Wouldn't it make more sense to have restricted liquids a few days ago before the plotters were apprehended? Why did they wait until it was already a done deal?

especially if your hijacking tool of choice isn't too caustic or
poisonous while liquid; perhaps one component of several to be
mixed on the plane?

112. 70%

Humans are about 70% water

Women a little less, men a bit more.

The timing of all this, after months of observation, suggests a political, not a safety, motive.

Especially given that binary liquid explosives were widely discussed TWELVE years ago.

We are traveling out of the country today. Not looking forward to the 'security' efforts.

The book ban: Hardest of all to endure or understand. Unless :tinfoilhat: that is actually the point.

118. Icky Thought
Hydration on airlines is very important. I read somewhere that 90% of the humidity on an airplane is from other passengers breath and sweat. Urban legend maybe? The "silver" lining is that the airlines can now sell passengers drinks and eye-drops at inflated prices. Yea, capitalism.

123. I agree. The ban is absurd.
Although I thought 9/11 would save Amtrak. It did for about two weeks.

I think this ban is absurd. It is a victory for the terrorists. I believe the plot was serious and real. But I think an announcement of the arrests coupled with a call for vigilance and calm would've been sufficient. Let the millions of travelers go on with their lives.

Would continue allowing liquids on board increase my risk of being blown up? Perhaps a minuscule bit. But this makes flying, which is already close to intolerable, even less attractive.

My chances of being killed by a drunk driver are a lot higher than being blown out of the sky by a terrorist water bomb. There is no cry to ban all liquor. That would save a lot more lives than this fiasco will.

Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 03:53 PM by Phoebe Loosinhouse
let a crew member put them randomly in the overheads and then LOCK the overheads? I am saying that you are still allowed to have make-up, saline solution, perfume, etc.

Wouldn't that solve the problem of people mixing lethal little cocktails in flight. The flight crew can sell sealed one dosage eye drops along with soft drinks during the flight.

When the plane is down and the passengers off the plane, the crew wheels out the carry-ons to the waiting area.

More work for the crew, some time lost for the passenger, but probably not a whole lot.

THis whole thing is still idiotic.Someone determined to kill you will always find a way. The long term solution is to make people not want to kill you.

Would also solve the problem of the idiot with the fat-ass bags stealing your overhead space.

I'd say they ought to allow you remove an item and use it in front of them such as contact lens solution if needed. Or perhaps on the planes they could have a little stock of travel size toiletries they could sell. At the least they ought to allow you to bring factory-sealed toiletries on board or make it requirement to buy them at gateside stores.

142. yes, like eye drops, lipstick, and water bottles and make-up, etc.
that we are not allowed to have anymore. My whole point is to allow people to keep those things to take onto their destination.

This only makes a difference to people who travel ONLY with carry-on luggage, like I do and about half the people I know. We decided it's much more pleasant to travel lighter, skip the long check-in lines and go directly to the gate, forget about lost luggage worries and get out of the airport at your destination a heck of a lot faster.

If you are someone who has ALWAYS checked luggage, this probably isn't a big deal.

143. Why is lipstick included?
I saw women tossing lipstick and even solid deodorant. I understand lip gloss; but lipSTICK is not a liquid or a gel. Same thing with solid deodorant...?

Parsing toiletries is making me dizzy. I flew 2 weeks ago and already I miss being able to use saline nasal spray and Carmex in future flights -- long flights are so drying. Think I might get my ENT to write a rx for the saline spray.
