LA Times: 'Duke' Inquiry Cites Breakdowns (Duke Cunningham)

New story in L.A. Times sounds like there's going to be a lot more coming out soon on a "widening" probe into Duke Cunningham, Dusty Foggo, etc. with MZMgate.

It also sounds like Republicans had earlier attempted to block Cunningham's subpoena, because of fear of more of them that might be implicated in the scandal.

The findings could widen the Cunningham scandal, a Democratic memo suggests.

WASHINGTON � An internal congressional investigation has found that "major breakdowns" in legislative controls enabled former Republican Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham to use his position on the House Intelligence Committee to steer classified government contracts to political cronies, according to a memo distributed this week to Democrats on the panel.

The memo accuses Republicans of backing out of an agreement to subpoena Cunningham, and calls for the public release of a 20-page unclassified report documenting the findings of the investigation.

The memo was written by Rep. Jane Harman (D-Venice), ranking Democrat on the committee, and circulated to Democrats on Tuesday.

Harman's description suggests that the seven-month probe by the House intelligence panel could significantly broaden the scope of the scandal surrounding Cunningham, the Rancho Santa Fe lawmaker who pleaded guilty last year to bribery and tax evasion and is serving an eight-year prison sentence.

The criminal investigation of Cunningham focused largely on the military contracts he influenced as a member of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

I just made in a different thread.

The criminal sleaze here just oozes and bubbles barely perceptibly under the surface and has yet to erupt for what it all means. MZM appears to have tentacles that go straight to the WH. NOBODY but a certain few blogs and the rare occasional print MSM appears to have noticed that latter fact.

WASHINGTON � Convicted former Rep. Randy �Duke� Cunningham was able to use his position on the House Intelligence Committee to steer classified contracts to favored companies because of a �major breakdown� in the way the government has overseen the contracts.

That's the conclusion of an internal committee investigation revealed in a memo sent this week to Democrats on the panel, according to one lawmaker who has read the document. Democrats are pushing for public release of the findings, contained in a 20-page unclassified report.

Democrats also charge that Republicans who control the committee are unwilling to subpoena Cunningham, a former Rancho Santa Fe Republican who is serving an eight-year prison term for bribery and tax evasion.

A spokesman for House Intelligence Committee Chairman Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich., denied the Democrats' claims, saying officials of both parties agreed to continue reviewing the investigative report, written by an outside attorney hired by the committee.

7. Need another reason the GOP is running so scared right now?

The poking around into Cunningham's little bribery boutique got stalled because the Republican-controlled committee wouldn't issue a subpoena. Imagine what might turn up with, say, Chairman Waxman or Chairman Conyers in charge of issuing subpoenas and conducting the investigation.

These corrupt bastards can't abide any close inspection of their activities, and they know it. A lot of them have visions of finishing their careers with a little time spent in the Gray Bar Hotel.
