U.N. aid chief says Mideast anger 'worst in 20 years,' fighting picks up

(Geneva-AP) August 11, 2006 - The UN humanitarian chief tells The Associated Press that the anger in the Middle East is the worst he's seen in 20 years.

Jan Egeland was in Lebanon, Israel and the Gaza Strip at the end of last month. He says he's counting on the UN Security Council to pass a resolution that will stop the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

Meantime, Muslim countries called a session of the new UN Human Rights Council. They introduced a harshly worded draft resolution blaming Israel for the bloodshed without mentioning Hezbollah.

The UN Human Rights chief says delegates must also weigh offenses by Hezbollah. Elsewhere, the ground fighting in southern Lebanon is picking up in intensity, with Hezbollah claiming it killed or wounded 19 Israeli soldiers.
