1. Israel satisfied with changes made to cease-fire resolution
Officials in the Prime Minister's Office as well as those close to Defense Minister Amir Peretz and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni expressed satisfaction at the changes made to the draft UN Security Council cease-fire resolution agreed upon by the U.S. and France, senior aides to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Friday night.

Olmert will thus recommend to his ministers Sunday that the cabinet vote in favor of the resolution.

France and the United States reached a deal Friday on a final draft resolution aimed at ending the month-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, and announced the UN Security Council would vote on the text later Friday.

Security Council member states will convene at 10:00 P.M. to deliberate over the resolution, and a vote is expected at 1:30 A.M.

10. On the other hand, Haaretz also has this (IDF fiercely opposed):

Last update - 00:09 12/08/2006

Government sources expressed satisfaction with Thursday's draft, saying that it includes two key Israeli demands: an international force with teeth, and the disarmament of south Lebanon below the Litani River. "It's true that the problem of Hezbollah has not been solved," admitted one, "but we are also not in a position to solve it militarily."

However, the Defense Ministry and the IDF General Staff are fiercely opposed to the emerging cease-fire, and senior defense officials accused Olmert of blocking the proposed advance to the Litani, thereby denying Israel a significant military achievement.

The officials charged that the emerging resolution is very problematic for Israel, because it makes no provision for the immediate return of the kidnapped soldiers (it urges their return, but this is not one of the resolution's operative clauses), includes no stringent supervisory mechanism to prevent a renewed flow of arms to Hezbollah, and does not guarantee the organization's disarmament. " Nasrallah will continue to mock us, and in the end there will be another war," said one.
"We understand that the leadership wants to do everything possible to save soldiers' lives, but too much is in the balance here," added another. "We must continue."

The defense officials argued that the cabinet should have allowed the expanded operation approved on Wednesday to start immediately, thereby creating military pressure for a cease-fire more favorable to Israel. By delaying the operation, they said, this opportunity has apparently been missed.

13. Olmert gives IDF green light to expand ground offensive

Senior Israel Defense Forces officers said Friday evening that despite the latest progress on the diplomatic front at the United Nations, the IDF "is continuing forward at full power."

The officers said that all forces slated to take part in the expanded incursion have already assumed forward positions in the field.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz on Friday ordered the IDF to implement an expanded ground operation in Lebanon.

<snip>

A government source in Jerusalem said the IDF received instructions to proceed with the operation after officials viewed an updated version of the draft of the cease-fire resolution Friday, which included several points which Lebanon backtracked from one day after agreeing to them as spelled out in Thursday's draft.

15. last minute modifications
Mr Olmert will ask his government on Sunday to ratify this draft of the resolution following last-minute modifications that would take into account certain Israeli demands, the radio said, citing "senior officials".

An Israeli drone fired at a convoy fleeing attacks in southern Lebanon, killing at least one man and wounding other people, witnesses and hospital officials said.

The state-run National News Agency said at least four people were killed.

The convoy of more than 100 civilian vehicles as well as vehicles carrying a detachment of 350 Lebanese soldiers and police was hit near the town of Chtaura in the Bekaa Valley.

18. Officials: Olmert Agrees to Cease-Fire Resolution
Officials: Olmert Agrees to Cease-Fire Resolution

Friday, August 11, 2006

UNITED NATIONS — Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has accepted an emerging Mideast cease-fire deal and informed the United States of his decision, Israeli officials said Friday.

Olmert will recommend that his government approve the deal in its upcoming meeting on Sunday, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief journalists on the internal discussions.

An Israeli official said the renewed offensive will continue at least until the government votes on the cease-fire agreement.

This comes as France and the United States reached a deal Friday on a final draft resolution aimed at ending the month-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with a likely vote by the U.N. Security Council later in the day.

I think you are right about that. Nothing like a quagmire to adjust the attitude. I only wish the US would learn that.
Or, more cynically, they had remover the Hezbolla rockets so they would not get hit so hard when the US hits Iran.

20. israelis are LOSING and their war is a failure - just like BUSH
so now that they cannot get what they want and it is obvious their plan failed, they are willing to have a cease fire.

hezbollah must be rejoicing in their underground safe bunkers and tunnels.

Maybe the Israelis can hire joe lieberman to make their plans now.

if all this killing stops, that will be a good thing for everybody for awhile anyway.

21. story is misleading: Olmert only going to reccommend it
be approved. It could still be blocked by the Israeli govt. meanwhile, the bombing continues.
but the headline is very misleading as it implies a ceasefire agreement has already been reached.
(not the OP's fault)

24. you must know more than I, it appears to me Israel has not intent
to agree to a ceasefire until they've completely flattened Lebanon or drawn Iran into the conflict, whichever comes first.

but hey, I'm no expert.

38. When Hezbollah figures out that they were knifed in the back ...
by the Arab countries, they will be pissed. Do you really think they will give up their positions in southern Lebanon? It is not a victory for Hezbollah if they end up to far away from the border to attack Israel.

40. Ceasefire if necessary, but not necessarily ceasefire
"Ehud Olmert's office said late Friday that the expanded incursion into Lebanon would continue "for the time being," despite agreeing to a cease-fire resolution drafted by the United Nations Security Council.

Israel will press ahead with its military offensive in south Lebanon until Israel's Cabinet approves an emerging Mideast cease-fire deal, the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said early Saturday.

"The logic would be that even in the framework of this successful outcome, if you hand over to the Lebanese army a cleaner south Lebanon, a south Lebanon where you have Hezbollah removed from the territory, that makes their troubles a lot easier," Regev said."

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/08/11/terror.details/index.html

We will see how it pans out. I hope a mutually acceptable ceasefire can be worked out, and soon.
