Undercover kitten killed by car

NEW YORK (AP) -- Fred, the Undercover Kitten who gained fame earlier this year by posing as a would-be patient to help police nab a phony veterinarian, has died, authorities said Friday.

The 15-month-old tabby was killed Wednesday when he wandered into traffic and was run over by a car, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.

Fred was a rescued stray when he was enlisted by law enforcement in February.

An undercover investigator posing as Fred's owner summoned the suspect to an apartment rigged with a hidden camera and pretended the kitten needed to be neutered. The man was arrested as he left carrying Fred in a box and cash for the operation.

RIP, Fred. Go find a white cat named Max at Rainbow Bridge - you two can hang out together.

Hope he gets a funeral, in any case.

If he likes doggies, he can play with our baby Brussels Griffon mix BeauBeau at the Bridge. He died last week in the same way, darted out the door past my partner and into the path of a SUV. He was also less than two years old.

I'd never lost a pet this way before, it's always horrible but so much worse when you think, if only I had seen him there before I opened the door... Prayers for Fred's owner who I'm sure is also struggling with that terrible guilt.

I was all ready to yell about him being kept outside, but it was just a bad accident. I hope he's in a blissful state now.



(btw, I know its not feasible for all pet cats to be kept inside, not meaning to slight cat "owners" who keep the animals outside, but this goes to show what dangerous lives outdoor kitties lead)
