Is an armament sickening U.S. soldiers?
NEW YORK - It takes at least 10 minutes and a large glass of orange juice to wash down all the pills — morphine, methadone, a muscle relaxant, an antidepressant, a stool softener. Viagra for sexual dysfunction. Valium for his nerves.

Four hours later, Herbert Reed will swallow another 15 mg of morphine to cut the pain clenching every part of his body. He will do it twice more before the day is done.

Since he left a bombed-out train depot in Iraq, his gums bleed. There is more blood in his urine, and still more in his stool. Bright light hurts his eyes. A tumor has been removed from his thyroid. Rashes erupt everywhere, itching so badly they seem to live inside his skin. Migraines cleave his skull. His joints ache, grating like door hinges in need of oil.

There is something massively wrong with Herbert Reed, though no one is sure what it is. He believes he knows the cause, but he cannot convince anyone caring for him that the military's new favorite weapon has made him terrifyingly sick.

38. Yes, all part of the cultural war and the termination of the middle class.
They are killing two birds with one stone. What about the OIL?
Is that oil contaminated with DU then shipped to the US refineries
for conversion to gasoline and home heating oil? Thereby, contaminating
consumers by proxy?

6. Depleted Uranium kills us all...
DU is carcinogenic, mutantogenic, it changes DNA, we pass it to our kids and spouses when our soldiers come home.
Veterans suffering from its exposure do not have to do anything more than touch it or breathe it, and the VA won't acknowledge it exists.

9. untold story since 91
The depleted uranium story remains successfully buried
for the most part and has been since Desert Storm.

Even the name gives is an implied innocence. Depleted,
done, no longer dangerous. Only thing is that is pure
bullshit. It is dangerous stuff - 0.7 times as radioactive
as enriched U-238.

And as the article points out, tons of it were used
in Desert Storm, where, coincidentally of course, 30%
of the troops returned home with strange and unknown
illnesses. Tons have been used in Iraq. Both as weapons
like bullets and artillery shells, and as armor.

All those tons of exploded shit are now U-236 dust particles
hanging around and dangerouse for.... billions of years.

That it is whitewashed, swept under the carpet, and otherwise
downplayed is sickening.

So is it's use in general.

So is the fact the our military exposes not only "the enemy"
to this stuff but future generations and our own soldiers who
are then cast aside when they come home sick.

For those who say we should just nuke Iraq and be done with it,
well... we already have. Twice.

how can DU (funny same initials as depleted uranium) help to bring this about?

also, I believe the metal Tungsten can be substituted for depleted uranium. But it is more expensive. hmmm money or safety, we all know which one the military cares about.

U.S. Colonel Admits 500 Tons of D.U. Were Used in Iraq

By Jay Shaft
Coalition For Free Thought In Media
5 May 2003

In three separate interviews a U.S. Special Operations Command Colonel admitted that the U.S. and Great Britain fired 500 tons of D.U. munitions into Iraq.

He has also informed me that the G.B.U.-28 BLU 113 Penetrator Bunker Buster 5000 pound bomb contains D.U. in the warhead. Until now, as far as I know, the materials used to make the warhead of the G.B.U-28 have remained shrouded in mystery.

He also admitted that privately the Pentagon has acknowledged the health hazards of D.U. for years.

16. Sounds similar to what this Canadian soldier experienced
after Gulf War 1.

Terry Riordon was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces serving in the Gulf War. He passed away in April 1999 at the age of 45. The official cause of death was Gulf War Syndrome.

Terry went to the Persian Gulf in December 26, 1990 with honor, dignity and pride - serving his country as Captain J. Terry Riordon of the Canadian Armed Forces. Terry left Canada a very fit man who did cross-country skiing and ran in marathons. On his return only two months later he could barely walk.

He returned to Canada in February 1991 with documented loss of motor control, chronic fatigue, respiratory difficulties, chest pain, difficulty breathing, sleep problems, short-term memory loss, testicle pain, body pains, aching bones, diarrhea, and depression. After his death depleted uranium (DU) contamination was discovered in his lungs and bones.

For eight years he suffered his innumerable ailments and struggled with the military bureaucracy and the system to get proper diagnosis and treatment. His wife, Susan Riordon, speaks most eloquently of the nightmare of physical, mental and emotional hardship endured not just by Terry but his entire family.

He was ultimately unsuccessful it getting the answers or help he needed in his lifetime. His final wish was to donate his body to independent research on DU. That was Terry's gift to all who served in the Persian Gulf. He wanted his body to supply the answers to years of suffering and frustration. Through his gift UMRC was able to have obtain conclusive evidence of internal DU contamination in his lungs and bones. Even after death Terry continues to contribute to his country and his fellow veterans.

17. A horrifying story-- read the whole thing--
Why are these guys forced to figure this out for themselves? And why are they forced to fight the all-in-your-head run around from the VA??!!!??

Rhetorical questions-- I already know!

<snip>

At Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C, he ran into a buddy from his unit. And another, and another, and in the tedium of hospital life between doctor visits and the dispensing of meds, they began to talk.

"We all had migraines. We all felt sick," Reed says. "The doctors said, 'It's all in your head.' "

Then the medic from their unit showed up. He too, was suffering. That made eight sick soldiers from the 442nd Military Police, an Army National Guard unit made up of mostly cops and correctional officers from the New York area.

But the medic knew something the others didn't. Dutch marines had taken over the abandoned train depot dubbed Camp Smitty, which was surrounded by tank skeletons, unexploded ordnance and shell casings. They'd brought radiation-detection devices. The readings were so hot, the Dutch set up camp in the middle of the desert rather than live in the station ruins.

"We got on the Internet," Reed said, "and we started researching depleted uranium."

22. 'Friendly Fire' -- Gary Null's documentary about Gulf War Syndrome...
Edited on Sat Aug-12-06 06:11 PM by veness
'Friendly Fire' Review:

One of the worst culprits misusing science is of course the military. It is bad enough what havoc modern weaponry wreaks on the target, but the soldiers hardly escape unscathed. In Vietnam it was just Agent Orange poisoning. Gulf War syndrome makes that look like a picnic. The military has a long history of experimenting on soldiers, and it appears their vain attempts to inoculate against weapons sent to Iraq from USA to fight Iran, such as botulism, anthrax, nerve agents, had nasty side effects on soldiers who never made it to Iraq. Depleted uranium is a euphemism for the stable isotope, since it is no good for fission bombs, but fine for dirty bombs. Nuclear waste is far more potent than DU in that sense. Military experts have the nerve to say DU is not toxic. It does take nearly the age of the earth for half to break down, so the rate of emission is slower than any other radioactive element. This does not make it safe by any means, especially if inhaled.

That was the state of my knowledge before I saw the LA premiere of the latest Gary Null documentary, Friendly Fire. Perhaps you think you know everything about this syndrome. I did, but by the end I was so angry it took me a long time before I could speak. The man is an innovative genius, and a straight shooter. This is a rare combination, in my estimation, and his documentaries have impact, not just on me.

With a news blackout preserving the coverup the movie blows out of the water, it may never make it out. The trailer can be seen at friendlyfirethemovie.com or garynull.com. See this movie, if it ever gets out - there is plenty more disclosed to make anyone mad than just the coverup. To see these insane experiments in action was quite a different experience than just knowing a little about the long sordid history.

24. Sensenbrenner refuses to acknowledge this
A dedicated Dem has been sending him information and following him around to townhall meetings for perhaps years now, asking him to officially look into this. Sensenbrenner does nothing. At one meeting, the Dem tried to pass around photos of deformed babies and the most horrible medical conditions you could imagine. A Sensenbrenner supporter in the audience got hold of them and put them under his chair before they got around very far. Just another example of what people don't want to believe about their government, but maybe someday soon they will have to.

I had heard about Gulf War Syndrome as a young kid and never really heard anything else about it since then. I remember hearing an odd rumor that it was caused by diet soda cans that got too hot in the desert... obviously it was a BS story in hindsight. It's sickening what the pentagon will do to hundreds of thousands of veterans just for a few slightly better weapons.

Daughter of Soldier Contaminated with Depleted Uranium in Iraq Born with Deformities

In a major expose in the New York Daily News, Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez uncovered the story of how a new-born baby may have suffered deformities because her father was exposed to depleted uranium while deployed as a soldier in Iraq. We are joined in our studio by Guardsman Gerard Darren Matthew and Sgt. Ray Ramos, one of the first confirmed cases of inhaled depleted uranium exposure from the current Iraq conflict.

30. Heavy metal poisoning is what does it
DU is only slighty radioactive. Inhaled, it does get into the sensitive tissues in the lungs, but the radioactive output is not of great concern. You're not going to wake up the day after as a hermaphodite or with X-ray vision or anything like that.

DU is, however, a heavy metal, like mercury or lead. You get that stuff in your blood stream, it starts messing with your body chemistry pretty badly. Can cause all sorts of nasty things to happen.

My question is, "Is Israel using this stuff in Lebanon?"

31. yes, important to emphasis the heavy metal toxicity
the DOD is well versed and backed by various studies questioning the harm of the radioactivity of DU. Whereas heavy metals are very toxic and prone to become permanent inhabitants of the bodies they encounter.

32. People forget uranium is a metal
It conducts heat and electricity, has a melting point, is mallable, etc.

It just also happenes to be unstable on a nuclear level in a fashion that is explosion-friendly. Just ask Hiroshima...

Look it up on Wikipedia, the all-knowing website.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depleted_uranium

Jeez, it says it was used in pottery and glass dyes. Man, don't eat THOSE paint chips either!

35. not slightly radioactive...
... 70% as radioactive as enriched U-238.

That's plenty. Especially if you have breathed in
the stuff and have bits **inside** of you doing their
thing.

You have toxicity and radioactivity.

Don't downplay that shit.

36. 60% as naturally occuring uranium (U-238)
U-238, the non-fissionable stuff, has a half-life of 4.5 billion years. Because it decays very slowly, it does not release much radiation or particles. U-235 is fissionable and has a much shorter half-life of 700 million years and accounts for much of the radioactivity of uranium ore.

Of course, the lower radioactivity is not very helpful when it's embedded in your body. It is one thing to walk past a lump of uranium, it is another to have it in your lungs for 50 or sixty years.

My point is that the first and most serious effects are heavy-metal poisoning, not genetic damage.

example, is not radiactive but is hideously toxic. Lots of metals are.
