NYT/AP: All Missing Egyptian Students in Custody
All Missing Egyptian Students in Custody
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: August 13, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The last two of the 11 Egyptian exchange students who failed to show up at their college program were apprehended Sunday in Richmond, Va., customs officials said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Mohamed Saleh Ahmed Maray, 20, and Mohamed Ibrahim Fouaad El Shenawy, 17, at an apartment building in Richmond on Sunday night. Virginia State Police and the Richmond Police helped locate the students.

Last Wednesday, one of the Egyptian students was arrested in Minneapolis and two were detained in Manville, N.J. On Thursday, two were arrested in Dundalk, Md., and one was arrested at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Three more were arrested Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

The students were to attend a monthlong program at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont. A group of 17 students arrived in New York on July 29. Six reported to Bozeman on time....

None of the students is considered a terrorism risk.

1. So, if they're not a risk..
.. then why have they been arrested or detained?

2. Is someone subject to this if they have a student visa...
for a specific program and then don't enroll in the program, or even show at the location? Just my guess.

6. Yup, that's it exactly.
That "student visa" is official permission to be in ONE
specific area (school) for ONE specific reason (study).

19. Somehow I'd bet they don't arrest the non-Egyptians who fail to show up.
Call me crazy.

5. What irks me is that the students felt so safe in not following
requested procedue...makes me wonder how many others in there situation don't report and our government just sits on its arse while we tax payers foot their salaries.

8. "foot their salaries"? HUH? You seem to be confused about this issue.
Wherever did you get the notion that this somehow results
in anyone's salary being footed by taxpayers?

12. Just more harrassment of brown-skinned Muslims
If these students had been Australian, Japanese, or Italian, do you think there would have been a big deal made over this?

13. In this day and time, yes I think regardless of the skin color
or national origin, a big deal wold have been made out of it.

20. On the contrary, in this "day and time," they were rounded precisely
because of their skin color and religion.

How many non-Egyptian foreign students who failed to report were arrested?

27. So you don't think ANY foreign students in the entire nation have failed
to report other than these Egyptians?

Is that your position?

26. There would NOT have been a big deal made of it
Perhaps INS would have looked into it. Inquiries would have been made, and I'm sure that they would wind up on some official report or something, but that's about it. Do you honestly think that there would have been a nationwide alert issued if they had been Japanese students?

14. We Are Saved!
Thank God for GWB!

That was a real close call.

So I picked my kid up from logan airport, which oddly and annoyingly had no arriving flight information available although departures were posted as usual. The really scary part was driving through the big dig tunnel complex. Now that was terrorism. I spent the whole time looking up at the ceiling wondering which of the 30 ton panels was going to be my doom.

15. I'm curious to know what the heck they were thinking. Maybe they plannned
to get here and seek out friends already here to just hang out or look around. Maybe they thought they'd be isolated, snow bound or in some kind of Old West type environment in Montana.

25. Most likely, they planned to do what a million folks have done before them
Step 1: Apply for a US Student Visa, since it's the EASIEST way to get
permission to travel to the US from a lot of Countries.

Step 2: As soon as they are here, head immediately to a prearranged
under-the-table job at some relative's small business.

Step 3: PROFIT. Not much profit by U.S. standards, perhaps, but a veritable
lottery-jackpot compared to their employment prospects back home.

16. Oh no! Not Manville NJ!
The asbestos and mesothelioma (asbestos-related lung cancer) capital of the universe.

Undoubtedly they were sweeping up little piles of leftover asbestos from the old Johns-Manville plant to make deadly asbestos bombs -- which could kill victims 20 years later by causing them to develop mesothelioma.

:sarcasm:
