Feds Probe "Fake News" at 77 Stations
www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002986110

Federal regulators are asking scores of broadcasters whether they failed to tell viewers about the sponsors behind corporate video releases presented as news, a practice criticized by watchdog groups who say showing "fake news" is an illegal breach of trust with local communities.

The Federal Communications Commission has issued 42 formal letters of inquiry to holders of 77 broadcast licenses, the office of Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said Monday.

Wait, does this mean the Bush FCC will be investigating the Bush administration for all those fake news stories it planted?

.....TDS advertises as fake news. Big difference!

edit:FOX NEWS went to court and won their case saying they had a right to lie to their viewers.
Isn't lying and deception the same thing? Wonder how many of those stations are FOX affilliates?

16. Just had a thought...two can play at that game, right?
What's to stop us from doing the same thing? Advocacy journalism...uncovering corruption...embarrassing the crooks...edit it down and send it to your local stations, who apparently are starved for content.

I saw a fluff piece on CNS News a few years ago about how wonderful the new Diebold machines are. How about an independently-produced exposé on their vulnerabilities and their worthlessness in a general election? Find someone who can pass for a local news journalist and have at it.

If it doesn't come from the government, it's not government propaganda. It's the people talking.

Why not? Anyone?

Beuller??

Paging Al Gore...

19. No. The stations would turn your work aside
I used to wonder why the Democrats weren't in the news. It seemed like they were being awfully quiet.

Turns out that every time they scheduled a news conference, the Bush administration counter-scheduled a press conference. Naturally the press had to choose and they chose the President over the "losing" party.

MoveOn.org, Marijuana Policy Project, NORML and others have tried repeatedly to run innocuous ads on local stations and are always turned down.

We have to face the truth: Mainstream media is owned by the Republicans.

20. Suppose we weren't blatantly partisan about it?
We just covered the stories we wanted covered, even if it meant equal-opportunity bashing. Not like an ad, just factual.

Or we do a sly Colbert-esque piece that appears to parrot the WH line but makes them look ridiculous to anyone paying attention.

25. It's not how or even what you say, it's who you are
You are the opposition. It doesn't matter how you word your ad or how much truth it contains.

That's their approach.

See: racism, bigotry, misogyny.

21. Because the marketing departments pay for the airtime
That's why they (particularly cash-strapped local news departments) run them. You don't have to pay a reporter, and you bring in a pile of cash.

5. The Usual Suspects: Fox, Clear Channel, Sinclair and Viacom/CBS
April, Free Press and the Center for Media and Democracy filed a complaint with the FCC after the center conducted a study finding unattributed video news releases had been aired at 77 stations. It said owners of those stations included Sinclair Broadcast Group, News Corp.'s Fox Television Stations, Clear Channel Communications, Tribune Co. and Viacom/CBS. The non-profit groups said the practice "has infiltrated broadcast news programming across the country."

Now this is news!

11. I don't even mind if they broadcast their lies
Just as long as they don't call it news.

The talking airheads on networks like FAUX should not be allowed to call themselves journalists or newscasters either.

We have a right to know whose opinion is being shoved down our throats.

18. "Must Read" book on this whole topic
Toxic Sludge is Good For You

http://www.prwatch.org/books/tsigfy.html

Publisher's Weekly describes Toxic Sludge Is Good For You as "a chilling analysis of the PR business...a cautionary reminder that much of the consumer and political world is created by for-hire mouthpieces in expensive neckties."

Since its publication in late 1995, Toxic Sludge has already gone into its sixth printing amid rave reviews. It's been featured on ABC-TV's Good Morning America, National Public Radio's Marketplace, and in scores of other radio, TV and print stories.

This is Special Book Sales Correspondent htuttle, reporting from Madison.

26. Fake News, why does that make me think of FOX News??
.
.
.

Maybe this is why ??

"Outfoxed" examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in television news. This film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public's right to know.

The film explores Murdoch's burgeoning kingdom and the impact on society when a broad swath of media is controlled by one person.

/snip/

This documentary also reveals the secrets of Former Fox news producers, reporters, bookers and writers who expose what it's like to work for Fox News. These former Fox employees talk about how they were forced to push a "right-wing" point of view or risk their jobs. Some have even chosen to remain anonymous in order to protect their current livelihoods. As one employee said "There's no sense of integrity as far as having a line that can't be crossed."

38. Why does this make you think of Fox? Good question since...
this is the list of stations involved and you will find CBS and ABC at the top of the list. It also shows you the clients that advertised this "fake news" that makes you think of Fox. Victoria's Secret, Cadillac, Panasonic, General Motors, Subway (evil Karl Rove sandwiches in your mind I'm sure), Daimler-Chrysler and a list goes on and on.

27. You should post the truth
Read this link about the FCC probe.

http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=10535>

"The stations pawned it off as their own reporting," said John Stauber, executive director of the Madison, Wis.-based Center for Media Democracy, who called the results of his group's 10-month look at TV stations use of video news releases "extremely shocking."

The groups said the clips were used by big stations such as KABC-TV in Los Angeles and WCBS-TV in New York and medium and small stations including KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City.

FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, who has expressed concern about video news releases, said he was pleased with the agency's action.

"We need a full and thorough investigation to learn all of the facts surrounding the undisclosed broadcast of what appears to be commercial material, and prosecute any violations to the full extent of the law," he said.

The Center for Media Democracy did the research that led to the complaint and reported that TV stations actively disguised sponsored content from companies including General Motors, Intel, and Capital One to make the video news reports seem like their own reporting.

Let's see the Tribune Company owns WPIX-TV, New York; KTLA-TV, Los Angeles; WGN-TV, Chicago; WLVI-TV, Boston; and the station in Hartford CT ... all good right wing stations... LOL

34. Adelstein is a Democrat, and in the minority at the FCC.
The FCC is headed by a panel of 5 Commissioners: 3 Republicans, 2 Democrats. One of them, Kevin J. Martin, is the Chairman, and he's a Republican as well.

Basically, the White House will allow this to proceed only as fast and as far as they want it to. The Republican majority can pull the plug on this at any time.
