Poll: Americans Back Air Restrictions (No Bounce for Bush-36%)
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 04:09 PM by RamboLiberal
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/08/14/opinion/polls/main1890820.shtml

Americans are signaling strong support for air travel restrictions in the wake of last week's foiled terror plot in Britain, a CBS News poll finds.

Three in four said banning U.S. air travelers from packing liquids such as drinks and gels like toothpaste in their carry-on luggage was necessary.

Nearly as many -- 70 percent -- said even tighter restrictions in England - permitting passengers to carry on only their wallet, passport and prescription medicine - were necessary.

The poll also found that news of the U.K. plot has heightened concerns about terrorism in the U.S.

(From under pic) The arrests in Britain have not helped President Bush's popularity so far, the CBS poll finds. His job approval remains exactly at 36 percent, where it was a month ago.

And to the 75% .....Baaaaaah

1. Damn sorry they didn't ask me.
I do NOT support the liquid ban. NOBODY has proven this threat to me. Nobody. Lotta hot air and I'm still waiting for one solid fact.

11. And I would certainly ban it over lip gloss, yes, indeed.
I am imagining frantic meetings in cosmetic companies all over the world. Airline sizes and packaging. Kits you can pick up as you disembark the plane......small enough not to be wasted when you return home.

Perhaps conferences with airline officials to discuss tamper-proof packaging.

I would suggest small sealed packets of moisturizer, like ketchup.

In fact, smart companies would be making the promotional sizes now and cutting a deal with the airlines to distribute them free.

13. !
Are you an entrepreneur? That actually sounds like a great idea to me (the deal-cutting with airlines - they could sell them in the airport lobbies) except that I think this whole security fad will not last more than a year.

14. A year of getting your product to moisture-starved fliers?
Sounds more than worth it to me. How long do most promotions last?

What a moment to build extraordinary good will.

A smart promotions executive would have been on the phone that morning.

2. No wonder why so much money is spent on advertising.
It's so easy to get results with a public as dumb & gullible as this.

15. True
Not necessarily dumb. Just distracted. Just, well, delusional. Most of the world is seen as a kind of fiction. As a tv show.

I was at a big family gathering this weekend, with relatives who traveled from around the country. And some that had to travel soon. The talk was all about this new bit of news. But only about the inconvenience of it. Never about the reality of it. The plot, the British intelligence, the FEAR of another attack. It was all, "what an inconvenience."

12. Didn't Dick Morris Claim that Bush Would Jump 10 Pts After Foiled "Plot"?
I love Dick Morris' "predictions":

Hillary would opt not to run for the U.S. Senate from New York: WRONG.

Hillary would lose "big" to Rick Lazlo in her first Senate bid. REALLY WRONG.

Bush would soar double digits (that's at least ten) points in opinion polls because of terror "plot"

Dick isn't even a clock that right twice a day. He's never correct.

which is what Dick really get paid for.

18. If the corporate media would just report, maybe folks would know that it
doesn't make us more secure. The follow is from the LTE that I just wrote to the Chicago Tribune.

Dear Sir,

Regarding last Sunday's editorial, which said regarding air travel, "but it will be safer, which is what counts". I am a too frequent traveler who upon returning to Wisconsin from Florida last Saturday had a chance to see our latest "security" measures in practice.

As is fairly well known, eliminating liquids, etc. from carry on luggage is relying on voluntary compliance, since the current screening systems cannot see many of these items. TSA recognizes this which is why they are randomly checking hand luggage at the gates for proscribed items. At the gates that I observed the random check found a surprising number of items. I also saw people in the gates rechecking carry on's and dumping various little bottles in the trash prior to boarding.

And for the comment that "most people carry far too much onboard anyway"? Maybe someone in the TSA should have warned the airlines that checked luggage would dramatically increase so that the baggage services could try to staff up. I checked my bag for the first time in years only to have it lost.

Not as convenient? Yes. More secure? No.

Prior to mouthing platitudes on the editorial page, I would hope that a newspaper of the caliber of the Chicago Tribune would do some fact checking.
