Sen. Allen's Remarks Spark Ire
<snip>

Democrat James Webb's Senate campaign accused Sen. George Allen (R) of making demeaning comments Friday to a 20-year-old Webb volunteer of Indian descent.

S.R. Sidarth, a senior at the University of Virginia, had been trailing Allen with a video camera to document his travels and speeches for the Webb campaign. During a campaign speech Friday in Breaks, Virginia, near the Kentucky border, Allen singled out Sidarth and called him a word that sounded like "Macaca."

"This fellow here over here with the yellow shirt, Macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great. We're going to places all over Virginia, and he's having it on film and its great to have you here and you show it to your opponent because he's never been there and probably will never come."

After telling the crowd that Webb was raising money in California with a "bunch of Hollywood movie moguls," Allen again referenced Sidarth, who was born and raised in Fairfax County. "Lets give a welcome to Macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia," said Allen, who then began talking about the "war on terror."

2. George Felix Allen: Real Asshole
Here's more:

<snip>

Kristian Denny Todd, a Webb spokeswoman, said the campaign wants to know what Allen meant by Macaca.

"We would like Senator Allen to tell us exactly what he means by the comment," Todd said. Depending on how you spell it, the name Allen gave Sidarth means different things.

If spelled M-a-c-a-c-a, the term refers to a species of monkeys in the Eastern Hemisphere. "Is he saying Sidarth is a monkey?" Todd asked. The word M-a-k-a-k-a refers to a town in South Africa.

Todd accused Wadhams of "reaching" for an explanation for Allen's comments. "The kid has a name. This is trying to demean him, to minimize him as a person," Todd said.

<snip>

Even the horse is saying, "What a putz."

38. Encouraging that even Tweety is now familiar with
the graffiti incident - means the corporate whores and inside the beltway types are paying attention to Allen's Achilles heel.

The New Republic article back in April clearly stated that 5 classmates and a former school administrator all agreed that the graffiti was racist. I'll bet Tweety accepted Allen's non-answer and moved on in the best corporate whore tradition.

55. Allen and Gilmore brought this state to the brink of bankruptcy
as "Asshat, Neo-con, Grover Norquidst felating, drown the government in the bath-tub" Governors. Thankfully, Governor Warner and now Governor Kaine have turned the place around.

All Allen and Gilmore did was parrot, over, and over, and over, and over, and over again; "tax and spend liberal-awwwwk, tax and spend liberal-awwwk, tax and spend liberal-awwwk" and the people of VA fell for it hook, line and sinker.

Gilmore's entire fucking campaign was "No Car Tax". That's it! For the individual savings of about $25, VA damn near lost it's Class A bond rating.

Fucking Punch-line Republicans. I fucking hate them

The Other Trent Lotts
by Bob Herbert

... A few years ago, when he was governor of Virginia, Mr. Allen issued a proclamation declaring April "Confederate History and Heritage Month." From Mr. Allen's pro-Confederate perspective, the Civil War was a struggle for "independence and sovereign rights." Independence, in this case, does not refer to the independence of black slaves.

I'd like to know if Senator Allen feels we'd all have been better off if the South had won the Civil War. It's a fair enough question. Mr. Allen loved the old Confederacy so much he displayed the Confederate flag in his living room. He was a little touchy about it, though. When someone accused him of flying the flag in his living room, he took umbrage. "It was never flying," he said. "It was nailed to a wall" ... http://www.commondreams.org/views02/1223-04.htm

37. I was in his class at Palos Verdes High, a wealthy
suburb 20 minutes south of LAX. He also had confederate flag stickers on his car and is best remembered for spraying the school with racist graffiti.

As an adult he kept a noose in his office, a Confederate flag on the wall of his home, and he's even named his 3 kids for his Confederate heroes. His only son, Forrest, is named for Gen. Nathan Forrest, early KKK Grand Wizard.

This verbal slip up provides a great opening for Webb if he chooses to take advantage of it. Allen has so many racial skeletons rattling around in his closet. It's time to let them out in a big way.

Some of the richer Indians are greedy as hell repukes who would sell their own mother for a buck. Oh and in case someone flips out, my parents are Indian.

George Allen is quite obviously a racist piece of shit. This, along with his history of racism (starting at an early age), obsession over the confederate flag, a noose in his senate office (a noose for God's sake?), and other demeaning statements made against blacks really lead me to believe he's a fuckin white supremecist.

What a condescending dick! Obviously if your skin is dark and you're not African American then you can't be anything but a furrner. It's clear he doesn't know the guy's name and isn't misspeaking by accident. If he took the time to ask someone on his staff there's no way the kid's real name could be confused with "Macaca." Most likely, having never heard that name before, he'd forget it anyway. This seems to be his attempt to pin a foreign sounding moniker on the kid to let everyone know he wasn't their kind (NOKD: Not our kind, dear). I'm surprised he didn't call him Osamama or something evoking terrorism.
I am ashamed that he is my Senator for many reasons and this is now added to the list.

Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 08:51 PM by Cooley Hurd
http://jeffrey-feldman.typepad.com/frameshop/2006/08/frameshop_macac.html#more

</snip> (Edited by Cooley - I hate that word...)
What I hope to show in these results are instances where the word 'macaca' or 'macaque' are being used as an offensive racial slur on par with other more familiar racial slurs. This research is intended to clarify what exactly happened in the outburst by George Allen using sources commonly available to anyone with a computer.

Google Search: ni***r+macaque

Source: Vanguard News Network Forum
Quote: "I watched the press conference they had when they caught the rampaging macaque. Ni**y the Pinhead here put on a hilarious performance: "I's only bin shairf fo' a few munts..." it mumbled over & over, desperate to pass dat ol' buck. "I's bin foccusin' on securetee in de jail, but now I be foccussin' on de coathouse, know whum sayin'?"

It's all part of the forced-at-fed-gunpoint jewfarce of pretending that ni***rs have any bidness leading anything more complex than tribal grub-hunting expeditions."

Farther down in the same thread, another reader quoted the section with 'macaque,' made it bold face and replied as follows:

Source: Vanguard News Network Forum
Quote: "I watched the press conference they had when they caught the rampaging macaque. ...goddamn rapin, lootin', murderin', rampaging ni***rs, goddamn them all...

<snip>

CONCLUSION
The term 'macaque'--also pronounced 'mukakkah'--is a commonly used racial slur on par with the word 'ni***r' in the united states.

In Europe, the word 'macaque' is largely a racial slur used to insult people of North African descent. It is roughly synonomous with 'dirty arab.'

Most of the results that came back in these searches took me to well known white supremacy websites--and to posts from the past two or three years. So this is a phrase that is still in use.

Also returned where hundreds of 'ethnic slur' dictionaries online, all of which list this term as a 'Belgian' racial slur.

36. In other words,
THIS WAS A CALCULATED STATEMENT. Two so conveniently conflating coincidences? I don't think so. They quite conspicuously dovetail together.

Look, I've been told far too many times by people here and elsewhere that we can't just assume it was intentional, or they knew it was going to happen, or they knew what was going on, it's not ther President's fault per se (I get that one at work), etc., and etc.....

Some people are willing to give this group the benefit of the doubt 'because it's the right thing to do' or 'because they're only human'. I call bullshit on that mentality. It makes no sense at this point, with so many lies and deliberate misactions or inactions on their part behind them, to assume that anything that happens around them isn't something they're completely aware of.

They are aware of the 'coincidences'. This was minor- but the Iraq war is not, and it's the same 'can't prove they're lying so don't say anything mean' mentality, then and now. I think, in light of everything that has come from this party in the last six years, we can very confidently state that if there is even the slightest jot of a stench of impropriety in any way way, we can assume the worst of the situation because these people are proven bigots, liars, and thieves.

I'm not particularly willing to give any republican the benefit of the doubt anymore (we, for example, have the possibility in MI of a DeVos in office here in MI, which would be a complete disaster; the perfect republican, he who inherited a fortune and is using it to make himself rich). This slur- and it oh so very much was a slur- was intentional as all hell, and Sen. Allen should be needing to look for another job soon- if all his constituents aren't either ignorant of the truth*, or racist like him.

* Probable amenest most of the American population, at least insofar as the facts of this story are concerned. And how much do you think it'll be discussed in the national media?

Thought so.

50. Why should he apologize? He won't mean it
An insincere apology is worse than no apology at all.

56. He was making sure they knew the kid wasn't with HIM.
I think he was making sure his constituents knew that he would never have someone who looked like this kid (not white) on his staff. He wanted to make sure they knew that, so he not only pointed out that the kid was working for Webb, but insulted him at the same time - on purpose.

Pandering to the base takes on a whole new meaning.

61. Email the house majority leader in VA
H. Morgan Griffith and tell him he doesn't even know he is a racist. I work with people like this all the time and hate it.

I pulled his email address from google. Drop him a line, but be polite and tell him that he must think most Virginians are racists by his comments in the Post.

Edited on Tue Aug-15-06 05:08 PM by Virginian
I wanted to tell them that this is par for the course with George Allen. He has a long history of racism. And of course, he is getting off the hook yet again, by dismissing this as just a made up nick name. You can imagine the name he might have made up if Sidarth had been black. The name was bad enough, but the tone he used was so condescending to wards the young man.

Trouble is they wanted the viewer input in video format.
WRC, NBC4.com.

I think Allen misspoke a little when he told Sidarth, "its great to have you here and you show it to your opponent because he's never been there and probably will never come."
I don't think Jim Webb is Siddarth's opponent, he's Allen's.
Allen must be lost. It seems he had a little problem realizing he was "here" and not "there".

edited for clarity.

67. My guess is that a campaign staffer knew what Macaca meant
and was referring to Sidarth in that manner, not knowing Allen had no idea what it meant and assumed that was his name. He then makes the reference during the speech, horrifying the staffer who had no idea his boss didn't know he was using a racial slur, and hence the blow-up. It just makes no sense for a Senator to knowlingly use a racial slur at someone in a public setting who he knows is videotaping every word he's saying. At some point this staffer's name will come out and he/she will get thrown under the bus, as the current explanations, confusing the name with mohawk, don't hold water.

The post above says Allen's mother was from Tunisia and it is equilivant to the "N" word in Tunisian. Another said it means something like "Dirty Arab" in Belgian.

Don't know, just repeating what I read.

71. Not surprised
This is just the latest in a long string of such incidents involving George Allen. In both high school and college, Allen was known to proudly display the Confederate flag in his home and on his vehicle. This is especially odd when you consider that Allen, a native of California, didn't even live in a formerly Confederate state until he was an undergraduate. As a young attorney, he kept a "decorative" noose hanging from a ficus tree in his office. He claimed that it was there to emphasize his strong support of so-called "law and order," but anyone familiar with lynching and its horrific role in American history knows better. Later on, while serving as Virginia's governor, Allen proclaimed Confederate History Month and referred to the Civil War as a "struggle for independence and sovereign rights" with no mention of slavery. And now he brazenly insults a young Indian-American man by calling him a monkey in front of a crowd. Pathetic and disgusting.

Allen literally sounded drunk on his butt - since I didn't see the video, was someone holding him up to the podium?

And could investigation into his background for DUI's or other drunken incidents prove fruitful in getting this guy out of office?

81. So now the comment was a "quip," implying an
off-the-cuff joking remark not meant to be taken too seriously. Nice to see the whores working hard for their repuke masters.

Another interesting tidbit in this article. The writer mentions the Confederate flag pin Allen wore in his HS yearbook photo, but not the fact that he did not attend HS is Virginia or anywhere in the south. Allen's high school was Palos Verdes HS in California, where he grew up. He didn't move to Virginia until after he completed his freshman year at UCLA in 1971. He has never been asked to explain why a privileged kid who grew up in California was so attracted to the Confederacy that he literally wore it on his lapel and on the bumper stickers on his car. Might it have tied in with the racist graffiti he sprayed on the high school walls? So many questions, so little info.

I hope Jim Webb understands who and what he's up against. If he intended to run an impersonal campaign on the issues, he can forget about it. Allen just handed him a huge gift and the opportunity to go after him on matters of race - a treasure trove just waiting to be cracked open.

84. As a person of Indian origin
I am deeply offended. I have forwarded this video clip to Indian democratic and republican organizations in US.

It is very clear that Allen was trying to make the Indian guy uncomfortable in an all-white crowd. In the guy's own words:

"I think he was doing it because he could, and I was the only person of color there, and it was useful for him in inciting his audience," said Sidarth...

"Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." What does that say about Allen's attitude toward the rest of the world? Anything outside of America isn't the "real world?" And this clown has presidential aspirations?

So much goes on day to day, this incident could be forgotten by the time of a 2008 presidential race; it needs to be remembered!
