White House says 12 radios went missing

White House says 12 radios went missing
How a pair of Bettendorf teens wound up with two of them still isn't clear.

Two White House radios found on a pair of Bettendorf teenagers last month were among 12 such devices that went missing shortly before a July 17 visit to Iowa by Vice President Dick Cheney, a government spokesman confirmed Monday.

But government officials again refused to say how the boys, ages 13 and 14, ended up with secure communications equipment marked as belonging to the White House Communications Agency.

Michael Thiem, public affairs officer for the Defense Information Systems Agency, said the 12 radios were discovered missing shortly before Cheney's trip to Davenport and Des Moines "by an advance communications team responsible for establishing mobile connectivity for the vice president."

"The circumstances that enabled the juveniles to come into possession of the radios are still under review," Thiem said in a written statement.

1. These are not mere radios.
These are very expensive portable devices, tactical portable radios with classified digital encryption and frequency agility. It is highly likely that whoever was in charge of these radios is in a pickle right now.

17. Generally
I'm with you on most of this stuff, but I fail to see how some techie from WHCA forgetting to pick up some radioes has anything to do with the "Bush Administration". WHCA is apolitical. Let's save our energy for the real battles.

19. The Bush cabal has appointed unqualified cronies at all levels.
Homeland Security is supposed to be non-political too, and we have an incompetent person with dual citizenship in charge of it.

Here is a link for those who defend Bush:

You love Bush so much, get your ass to Iraq.

There is a recruiting crisis right now. Stop fighting the culture war at your keyboard, brave warrior! Get your ass in a real one.

was busy doing a heck of a job judging a horse show at the time.

37. Hey pal
I was simply stating that not every screwup that occurs is personally the fault of Bush. I have an intense dislike of President Bush (to put it mildly) but I don't let my emotion cloud my judgement, as you clearly cannot do. If you'll look at my posts I think it's pretty clear I'm a huge anti-Bush, but I really don't have to prove it to someone like you. So unless you have something substantive to contribute to this thread, I'd really rather if you just left me alone.

Thanks.

24. Well to me it shows a level of incompetence, that never been matched.
And it's my understanding that these particular radios weren't just radios but have encrypted information that is valuable in of themselves.

I mean a radio here a billion dollars there, pretty soon we're talking real incompetence. And since 2000 i have no desire to cut this bunch any slack.

7. We'll know who lost the radios - they'll be promoted or awarded a medal
But the person who discovered the missing radios and alerted authorities will be in trouble.

Got to quell those whistle-blowers, you know?

15. I wouldn't want to screw around with them.

If they are used by the White House staff they are probably equipped with a GPS sender that sends out info whenever the power is turned on. They wouldn't want to release security info but that might be how they caught the kids.

16. Needless to say..
... these devices, if they fell into the wrong hands, could be reverse-engineered which would totally compromise the secrecy of any communications made using them.

This is a big deal.

Why would the VP need 12 RADIOS to communicate with his team and why would he or anyone with him leave these radios behind if they're so important?

20. Just like when the Presidential plans were found in garbage in May
It appears to me that someone in the Whitehouse beat doesn't like the current regime. Remember this one?

Bush Administration officials insist they have no idea how a minute-by-minute schedule for the President's trip to Florida landed in a pile of trash, where almost anyone could grab it, hours before the President took off.

But the White House does admit the document should have been burned not tossed.

The document in question appears to be a White House staff schedule for the President's trip to Florida Tuesday. And a sanitation worker was alarmed to find in the trash long hours before Mr. Bush left for his trip.

It's the kind of thing you would expect would be shredded or burned, not thrown in the garbage.
Randy Hopkins could not believe what he was seeing.

25. from the article.
"" Bradshaw and Reyes claim to have found the equipment hidden in some trees near the two hotels.""

Perhaps they were placed there by someone on the WH staff to be picked up later. Or have I watched too many episodes of 24?

30. The article has been rewritten since you c/p'd that.
And now that information is no longer in it.

I guess it was incriminating someone with the power to have it pulled.

This does not happen by accident. Those kids unwittingly picked up something
carefully left for someone else to find.

27. When darth cheney visited our fair town
last month, the local police were confiscating...flags on little wooden sticks from some protestors. Most of the people who got their sticks confiscated were elderly people who have more patriotism and have sacrificed more than cheney ever will. These confiscations were done at the behest of the Secret Service, which probably means cheney was behind it. Maybe the SS should have been paying more attention to those kids instead of the protestors with flags on sticks. Just another example how they want to squelch our free speech at the cost of security. There may be some links to both of these stories at www.qctimes.com. I suspect if you search the archives you may find these stories. Quite frankly, I'm just too lazy to look at this time.

29. How do these people tie their own shoes without hanging themselves?
Truly, this is some mind-boggling shit. Tell me again how much better the GOP is on security, when they can't even keep track of their own squawk boxes. And aren't we lucky that it was just a couple of kids who found this, instead of someone with slightly less candor and relative innocence?

The Mighty Republican Wurlitzer had a field day with the alleged Clinton haircut. My guess is that this mishandling of sensitive communications equipment will vanish with nary a blip on the national radar, hardly worthy of a mention by the librul media.
