WASHINGTON (AFP) - A wave of attacks on US allies in Iraq (news - web sites) quickly overshadowed the holiday glow of President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s surprise Thanksgiving trip to Baghdad, as his rivals renewed their criticism of his management of the war.

Former NATO (news - web sites) commander Wesley Clark (news - web sites) said the 2004 presidential election would be a referendum on Bush's "war on terror," which he accused the administration of losing.

"A visit, a photo op, or whatever it was to Baghdad, does not make up for a failed strategy," the presidential hopeful told CNN.

"What our soldiers really need is not a one-hour or two-hour morale boost visit from the president. They need a strategy for success. That's what this administration hasn't given them."

1. Clark should have pushed harder that it is Bush who is losing

the war on terror. The report stated that he said it like this once, but a second time he didn't.
"The country has to understand, Bush is not winning the war on terror."
Big difference in message.

Put it all together into something like this:

"The 2004 presidential election will be a referendum on Bush's war on terror, which he is clearly losing. A visit, a photo op, or whatever it was to Baghdad, does not make up for Bush's failed strategy. What our soldiers really need is not a one-hour or two-hour morale boost visit. They need a strategy for success. That's what President Bush and his administration hasn't given them. The country has to understand, Bush is not winning the war on terror."

Tightly couple Bush to Failure.
