Former US president slaps down 'subservient' Blair
LONDON (AFP) - Former US president Jimmy Carter lashed out at British Prime Minister Tony Blair for being "so compliant and subservient" to the Bush administration in Washington.

"I have been surprised and extremely disappointed with Tony Blair's behaviour," Carter told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper as he promoted his new book "Faith and Freedom."

"I think that, more than any other person in the world, the prime minister could have had a moderating influence on Washington, and he has not," said the 81-year-old former head of state.

"It's a shameful and pitiful state of affairs, and I hold your British prime minister to be substantially responsible for being so compliant and subservient."

1. Big UPs to Jimmy for speaking the truth.....
...and the fact that Tony is allegedly Labour -- really stinks.

Great quote from the former President, lets see if anyone notices.

London? Calling?

5. Stop speaking the truth, Jimmy! Let us remain in our collective stupor!
Several Labourites have already defected to the Liberal Democrats out of sheer disgust with Blair's complicity with war crimes in Lebanon.

PM flies home to discontent

Press Association

Saturday August 26, 2006 2:13 AM

Some 37 Labour Party members in Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett's constituency of Derby South lashed out as they quit for the Liberal Democrats.

The defectors, predominantly Muslims of Pakistani origin, included Mohammed Rawail Peeno, a Labour Party ward chairman, and Masood Akhta, an ex-city and county councillor.

Mr Peeno said: "We could not remain in the Labour Party after their mishandling of the Lebanon crisis. When Margaret Beckett refused to back a ceasefire and instead sided with George Bush, it was the breaking point for us.

"New Labour have abandoned the beliefs that led me and thousands of others to join Labour in the first place."

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell called the defections "significant". He added: "The Government's position on the Middle East and Iraq shows just how out of touch it is with many in its party and the majority of the general public."

6. Maybe the wiretapping sh!ts are blackmailing the Poodle ...

We saw the FIB do this for decades under J Edgar, and Nixon happily incorporated it into his bag of tricks. Much of the team today comprises former Nixonites and CIA-thugs from the reign of Bush I. It seems likely that the Publicans tried to blackmail the President during the Clinton years, and Tripp's illegal recording played a major role. We know that phone intercepts began early in the reign of Bush II and that diplomatic traffic was not excluded.

What else could account for Tony's incredible spinelessness?

8. This is a stunning statement- a former U.S. president in essence
lamenting that a foreign head of state supported OUR current president.

I still don't know myself how Blair could align with someone so inferior to him intellectually.

52. that should have been enough of a clue for Blair ...
He was probably hoping to be the big hero, bringing Bush into the fold on global warming ... just taking it for granted that Bush would be willing -- nay, eager! -- to reciprocate for all of Blair's support on the Iraq issue.

Bush must have been laughing with glee, as he watched Tony's face fall after being rebuffed!

I'd have thought that Blair would have smartened up and started distancing himself, since it was quite clear that Blair's risking his political future -- to say nothing of all those British soldiers maimed or killed -- would not result in Bush making the tiniest token gesture.

9. Carter is hated by Phony "christians" because he's a real one.
He was probably in most ways the most decent human ever to be our President. It's a goddamned shame he's so vilified by the people who pretend to adhere to his own values. They're the filthiest hypocrites on the planet. :grr:

And a  to Jimmy

I met him briefly when he dropped in Muskogee, OK campaigning. The only president I've ever even
seen in person.

17. Yes, he is. But the awful irony is that Americans are not that smart
in far too many cases.

Our own country is infested with a significant portion of people who hate him for being a peacemaker
(as much as he was able to be) and hate Clinton for some of the same reasons.

36. Good for Carter!!!
And maybe that will finally make it clear that it's not anti-American to oppose Bush and those who poodle up to him.

I think most of the British voters have also been 'surprised and extremely disappointed with Blair's behaviour'. He was re-elected because the opposition in the form of Michael Howard et al were even worse, not because of his own merits.

Tony Blair is just another pawn on Cheney's chess board. being a populist, southern Democrat has nothing to do with starting wars, kissing the butts of corporations, or supporting taxcuts when deficits are high. Its bringing morality to democracy, fighting against social darwinism, and speaking out when cowards are called moderate! :yourock:
