Senate Hopeful Explains Anti-Gay Columns
Isn't it fascinating how the party of "freedom" seems to be overrun with ugly bigots?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060827/ap_on_el_se/laffey_columns

CRANSTON, R.I. - U.S. Senate candidate Stephen Laffey said he regrets that he wrote columns denigrating gays when he was a college student.

Laffey, the mayor of Cranston, acknowledged writing the columns in a story published Saturday in the Providence Journal. The paper reported that it received copies of the columns anonymously in the mail earlier in the week.

Laffey, 44, running a closely watched race against moderate Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record), said whoever sent the articles wanted to smear him before the Sept. 12 primary. He called the writings "sophomoric political satire" and said they do not represent his views.

"Do I regret some of these things? Sure," he said. "But at the time, we were just having fun. We thought it was funny."

1. Anti-minority remarks of any sort, whether racial or gender-based,
create an atmosphere that excuses bigotry, and are therefore a form of violence.

LGBTQ people doubtless did not think Mr. Laffey's comments were "funny."

Typical far-right Republican hatemongering.

4. I don't think they've got the Japanese yet
I think that's the only ethnic group this crowd hasn't been proven to have slandered. I don't think Archie Bunker was as big a bigot as these creepy little worms.

"All the homosexuals I've seen are sickly and decrepit, their eyes devoid of life."

I never use this, but in this case..

:puke:

5. Michelle Malkin has defended the WWII internment of the Japanese
I'd think that counts. One of my elementary school teachers was sent to the camps, with her whole family. She was a very young girl, but was locked up for fear that she might be a spy. After getting orders but prior to internment Japanese families sold thier belongings for pittances, because they knew thier neighbors would steal them if they were left behind. Many lost thier farms and thier livelihoods (in my area whole neighborhoods were built on the site of Japanese families strawberry fields while they were gone.)

To have somebody defend that is pretty damned insulting.

7. Oh yeah, you're right
There has been a few comments justifying the internment of both the Japanese and Germans, I forgot. A family friend was in the camps, she never talked much about it except to say it happened. She had become a social worker and seemed to just want to put it behind her. I think it's pretty damned insulting to defend that horrific chapter of our history too. Perhaps they haven't missed anybody now that they've all crawled out from under their rocks.

12. They gave them a good going over during WW2
"All the homosexuals I've seen are sickly and decrepit, their eyes devoid of life."

That quote is a killah--perhaps the people in question don't like their view of the author, and that is what drains them of their creative and joy-filled spark!

8. Bad Timing - For US!
Damn, this would have been MUCH better if this came out AFTER the primary and this guy Laffey had won the reichpublican nomination - only to have this come out as he's running against a democrat.

Sorry.

He could not have anticipated the Party Line shift from way back then to now.

Sorry.

Asshole is as one does/behaves. That object/any action is not exclusive to gays.

Sorry.

This guy is an asshole (and I'm not interested).

Sorry.

13. Sounds like a real gas like Dubya.
Got enough clowns in the Senate. This guy sounds like a jerk; looks like a jerk and is a jerk. Jerks like this never change, by the time they are of college age their perceptions are quite well set. George W. is a fine example.

15. Typical Republican apologies
They are telling the truth to smear me. I am sorry for some of what I did. Just once I would like to see a Republican offer a real apology. Or failing that actually taking responsibility and not apologizing at all.

18. England was "having some fun" when she abused Iraqi detainees
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 08:12 AM by UpInArms
Limbaugh back to labeling Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse "hazing" and "a fraternity prank"

Citing statements by U.S. Army investigators during a preliminary military court hearing of Pfc. Lynndie England that England was "having some fun" when she abused Iraqi detainees, radio host Rush Limbaugh, on August 4, returned to the same script of his controversial remarks about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. On the August 4 edition of the nationally syndicated Rush Limbaugh Show, Limbaugh said that England and the other accused soldiers were engaging in acts that were "sort of like hazing, a fraternity prank. Sort of like that kind of fun."

Limbaugh once again compared the Abu Ghraib scandal to "hazing" to support his claim that orders for the abuse "couldn't have gone all the way to the top ." Nevertheless, Limbaugh claimed, if Senator John Kerry (D-MA) loses the presidential election in November, "the first thing they're going to do try to impeach Bush over this Abu Ghraib thing."

Earlier in the program, Limbaugh further downplayed the severity of England's actions; Limbaugh described how, when he "got pulled over" by the police in New York on August 1, he "was halfway hoping that one of the cops would be Lynndie England, but no such luck."

19. It gets more interesting
In this week's Time, Laffey describes his eldest brother, who died of AIDS, as a "promiscuous homosexual."

What type of fucked up human being talks about his own brother that way?
