Reuters: NATO soldier killed in attack in Afghanistan
NATO soldier killed in attack in Afghanistan
Sun Aug 27, 2006 7:47 AM BST

KABUL (Reuters) - A NATO soldier was killed in an insurgent attack
in Afghanistan on Sunday, the force said, the latest NATO soldier
to die since the alliance took control of the south from a U.S.-led
force last month.

NATO troops used small arms and heavy machine guns to repel the
attack in the southern province of Helmand, NATO said in a statement.

The extent of insurgent casualties was not clear, it said.

NATO did not give the nationality of the soldier killed. British
troops make up the bulk of NATO troops in Helmand.

UK soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier has been killed overnight in the southern Helmand province
of Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

The MoD said the soldier was "shot and killed" in a clash with "enemy
insurgents" in northern Helmand.

But it would not confirm if the death happened during an attack on a British
base. Next of kin are being informed.
