Dean: I'd 'Break up' Fox News
http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2003/12/2/110210.shtml">newsmax
Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean pledged Monday night to "break up" the Fox News Channel along with other conservative news outlets owned by media baron Rupert Murdoch.

"Eleven companies in this country control 90 percent of what ordinary people are able to read and watch on their television," the ex-Vermont governor complained to MSNBC's Chris Matthews, who then asked the candidate point blank:

"Would you break up Fox? . . . Rupert Murdoch has 'The Weekly Standard.' It has got a lot of other interests. It has got 'The New York Post.' Would you break it up?"

Dean shot back, "On ideological grounds, absolutely yes."

1. 1. Newsmax SUCKS.
2. This quote is being taken entirely out of context.

Although, it's not a bad idea.

3. I agree.
Dean wasn't "complaining" matthew's, who spits every damn time he talks, kept pushing Dean to give this answer.

14. Newsmax makes things up. That's their raison d'etre.
The by-line usually reads "by Carl Limbacher and the NewsMax staff."

It's gotten to be really funny. When I teach research paper writing, I show my students NewsMax and use it as an example of a source to avoid.

2. Drudge has the same "story"--
He posts parts of an MSNBC transcript, out of context, and then calls it "developing..." !!

8. MSNBC hasn't even posted a transcript yet
I just checked the Hardball page, and the Dean interview isn't on their yet. I wonder where Drudge and newsmax got theirs.

4. I saw this interview. This was said tongue-in-cheek and got a good laugh.
Dean held up very well under Matthews' line of loaded questions. He did not specifically say that he was targeting FOX, but that Mega-Media stands in the way of Democracy. Same with Mega-Corportations, and that Capitalism needs rules, "just like ice hockey."

I was impressed (won over?) with Dean on Hardball last night.

11. Thanks for the overview. I had to miss it.
The Tweetster interrupts his guests a lot, and I was hoping Dean had done well.

6. Another desperation heave toward the end zone
You see it every weekend: A team that's hopelessly behind has the quarterback throw the ball downfield into triple and quadruple coverage. We see the highlights of the times it works over and over again because it happens so rarely.

Praying for a miracle or a flag, the Repukes keep lobbing their wounded ducks toward the goal line . . .

20. HA! But it probably wouldn't be hard to do--any of it.
If we reinstituted the Fairness Doctrine, a lot of the garbage would simply disappear!

16. Good!
The man has moxy. NO ONE else would say this. Or, maybe they would, but Dean beat them to it. (well, Gore will say it NOW but he wouldn't when it counted!)

19. How noble of Tweety
to more concerned about breaking up Fox than what the implications of breaking up the NBC/GE empire would do to him!

23. Dean Did The EXACT OPPOSITE
Aside from his comment about "ideological grounds".

He said that he would NOT break up Fox ala FDR's Trustbusting.

In fact, Chris asked Dean straight out if he's for ReRegulation and Dean said No, Accountability.

Meanwhile, this is a complete 180 from last month when Dean said he was FOR REREGULATION.

ReRegulation (passing new legislation) is very different than Accountablity (enforcing existing laws).

24. Tweety gets his "money shot"
He kept badgering Dean, "Would you break up fox News?" over and over, until Dean laughed and said that. Tweety does this often, he repeats a stupid question over and over until the person responds with an answer to the explosive and bating question. It's just like in the porn industry, it's called a "money shot". I guess Tweety got his envelope of cash left on the dresser from Murdoch this morning.

25. What he should have said was...
Hell I wouldn't just break it up, I'd blow it up! and I'd strap Rush Limbaugh to the smart bomb before they dropped it!

26. newsmax
When newsmax distorts things and takes them out of context to the point that its conclusions are not factual, then it is no longer really news. Please use caution when posting articles from right-wingnut sites. Thanks.
