Many Americans fear another terror attack

Many Americans fear another terror attack
5 years after 9/11, poll shows vivid and personal anxiety in N.Y. and D.C.

WASHINGTON - Fear of another terrorist attack remains real for many Americans. For people who lived in the two cities struck by the terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001 — New York and Washington — the fears are intensely personal and vivid.

They're nervous about public transportation, take note of suspicious people and think back often to the horrors of Sept. 11, an AP-Ipsos poll found. Well over half of New Yorkers and Washingtonians are worried their communities will be attacked again. Nationwide, a third worry they will be attacked.

Five years after the attacks, the terrorist threat is still evolving. Britain's foiling of what authorities called a multiple hijacking plot in early August was a stark reminder. Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, who claims to have ordered the Sept. 11 attacks, remains free, probably in the mountains near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. And the only person convicted in the U.S. for the Sept. 11 massacre is Zacarias Moussaoui, a Frenchman who was in jail when it happened.

...

Among the poll's findings:

59 percent approved of President Bush's response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks while less than half in New York and Washington felt that way.
35 percent nationally were worried they'd be victims of terrorism, a number that spiked to 43 after the alleged terrorist plot in Britain was announced.

6. Right, and most of them live in flyover country
where they've got a much higher chance of being struck by lighning or winning the lottery than they have of ever being anywhere near a terror attack.

They're the ones who also take 9/11 most personally.

Fools.

2. So are the sheeple too terrified to see that it's the manifestation of
their own fear that causes terrorist attacks?

And by that, I mean the fact that we seem to have become a dangerous entity on the international scene -- because out of 'fear' and 'self-defense' we seem to be invading a large chunk of the M.E.

3. So much for all the bravado of "Standing Tall."
I guess it's easy to stand tall when you are bombing others, not so easy when you are being bombed yourself.

4. I do think we may be attacked again--someday, somewhere. But I hope
this tension does not get in my way of just living.

7. 59% approve of his reponse to the attacks?
What is wrong with these people?

I wonder which response they approve of -- letting OBL slip away, attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, thwarting as much
as possible an inquiry into what went wrong, or maybe continuing to read "My Pet Goat"?

13. Welcome DeeDeeNY!
More likely the nauseating 'bullhorn moment'and attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 because a lot of them were led to believe otherwise.

I've had my fill of the 'Clinton didn't do anything about terrorism' crap, some people just wanted a war in Iraq.

9. The administration
CONSTANTLY reminds people that another attack is probably imminent and could happen any day now and if it does it will be the fault of those cowardly Democrats, Liberals, Feminists and non-Christians who hate America and encourage our enemies.

We're CONSTANTLY being told that there's "credible" evidence of some plot or another, and then, days or weeks later, it's barely mentioned that the "credible" evidence is four years old or only existed in the imagination of some deranged person out there.

And I'd actually like to see how the poll questions were worded, because that makes a huge difference in what the responses are. But with all the fear-mongering out there, we shouldn't be surprised. Most people do not want to think for themselves. And they are conveniently given the idea that they need to be afraid, very afraid, and so they are.

10. terrorist
the people in this Country are worried about all the wrong things
49 People died in a airplane accident not from terrorism
i am sure not one bottle of hair gel was on that plane
they died because of a Mistake by the Faa
I saw The spokesperson on tv admit rules were broken
only one person working that morning and that person turned his back from the
plane taking off to do something else
the lights weren't turned on for gods sakes the runway was dark
where is the outrage
next time your asked to take off your shoes at the airport maybe you should ask
how many people are in the control tower

16. I fear for a terrorist attack upon America but have absolutely no
fear of me personally being attacked... I wonder how many would feel the same if the question was worded so...An individual has more chance of being struck by lightning than being the victim of a terrorist attack..I feel pretty certain there will be a bank robbery in America this year but I don't worry about my money in the bank.
