Basra Oil Workers Strike Could Resume Sunday

Basra Oil Workers’ Strike Could Resume Sunday

Aug. 31, 2006 -- Oil pipeline workers in Basra, Iraq, will resume their strike as early as Sunday if authorities do not meet the remaining demands of workers, the Federation of Workers’ Councils and Unions in Iraq said Thursday.

About 500 oil and gas workers went on strike for 48 hours beginning Aug. 22 for higher pay, overtime, timely pay and ambulances at the work site.

The oil ministry agreed to raise the salaries of workers, which average about $200 a month, but did not commit to the remaining items.

A general strike by union workers could soon follow the Basra oil workers’ strike, the FWCUI said. Union leaders will meet next week to finalize demands and set a deadline for the authorities’ response. The demands currently under discussion include housing the workers, raising minimum salaries, expanding limits of promotion and salary, converting contracted workers into full-time workers, and curbing bureaucracy and corruption.

1. I saw the FWCUI President speak in Atlanta
He was part of an antiwar tour. He was a very kind man but very outspoken about what our country has done to his. I wish him luck.

2. I met him, too, in Minnesota
Kind and held no animosity toward average Americans but not afraid to speak out.

There are a lot of pictures from the Iraq Labor Tour on USLAW's website.

3. It's funny a few months before I saw Hilary speak about the war
Her account and his were radically different. Since that time I never will regard her as anything but a bush-lite warmonger, her fans be damned.

9. We MUST get behind the oil workers if they strike
The obscenely wealthy elite will not be satisfied
until all unions are obsolete.

Good work as always Kat!

10. So why didn't the price of oil go up as a result of this strike?
I do believe in the concept of peak oil, however, as we are in run up to that and anytime there is a "correction" or a explosion or civil strife or corrosion or an attack on the pipelines, the price shoots up. How come that didn't happen this time?

something to ponder while I contemplate my navel...

11. Iraqi oil isn't even a player in world markets now
Since 2003 they haven't been able to get the oil flowing anywhere close to pre-invasion levels.

The pipelines are being attacked by so many factions (not the employees) so often that the strike, short as it was, didn't cause a blip here.

Check this out for lists of attacks, and an analysis.

And have you noticed the drop in prices at the gas pump? Our gas has declined about 30 cents a gallon over the last 10 days. I think Junior asked his oil buds to go easy on him as he faces losing the mid-terms for his party.

12. You're right on the money with that...
I'm waiting to see what November 8th brings us with the prices.

Prediction:

Democrats win control: Price goes up.

Repukes remain in control: Price goes up.

I believe in peak oil, but I also believe that much of what we are currently seeing is nothing but market manipulation.
