WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Federal Communications Commission has been asked by about two dozen people to impose financial penalties in connection with television and radio broadcasts in which President Bush was heard swearing at the G-8 summit in July.

Bush apparently thought a microphone was off last month while he was speaking with Prime Minister Tony Blair. While discussing political tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, Bush used the word s***. His comments came just four months after federal regulators said that the word was one of the most vulgar, graphic and explicit words relating to excretory activity in the English language and would likely trigger fines if broadcast.

Many listeners were offended after hearing Bush's remarks on channels such as CNN, a cable network whose programs aren't subject to Federal Communications Commission fines. But at least one person complained that the word was aired on an NBC affiliate - a station that is subject to FCC penalties since its programs air over spectrum licensed from the government.

"In the report on President Bush being caught swearing with a microphone on, your report aired the expletive, and the reporter herself even repeated it!" according to the letter to the FCC and WCSH-TV in Portland, Maine. "Every other story I saw on TV and heard on the radio earlier today had the word beeped. I'm not trying to be a prude... okay maybe I am, but I expect more from my local news station!" the person wrote, according to a letter that was one of many obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

<snip>

Stiff new fines for airing indecent programming are helping fuel the debate. In June, President Bush signed into law a measure that imposes a penalty on broadcasters of $325,000 per violation, a tenfold increase from the $32,500 penalties previously in place. Cable and satellite service providers aren't subject to fines, which are levied on broadcasts aired between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

8. Who cares.
It seems to me that Bush has done stuff that's a lot more offensive than saying the word "shit."

18. True,
he has. But why should he be above the law? That, I think, is the real issue here, not the degree of offense.

11. The fines will be imposed against the broadcasters, not *
The broadcasters had the option to air it or not. They chose to air it and I'm glad they did. It showed the sheeple willing to listen that * is not the saint they think he is. If FCC complaints are pursued, broadcasters will be chilled from airing these candid shots in the future.
I think we really should think about the consequences before acting.

14. I completely agree
if broadcasters are fined for this, they will definitely think twice about airing any similar events in the future. That's not what we want. We want video and audio of Bush cursing (even if it is beeped) replayed as often as possible on as many outlets as possible.

The worst part is, we'd be giving the broadcasters an actually legitimate reason for not showing Bush looking or acting like an asshole.

Totally NOT the effect we want. At all.

The GOP would be threatening to use their manly language anytime they wanted a bribe from the media or as a means of raising revenue so they wouldn't have to raise taxes. In turn the media would past the costs down the line and advertisers would have to contribute "verbal protection" donations as well.

GOP candidates would be storming the broadcast rooms of AR and any liberal host to swear them into bankruptcy, which money would go into the government coffers they control.

17. "Do you want to be as lazy, stupid, and rude as George W. Bush?"
I know quite a few pre-teens who think he is VERY uncool, and would be mortified to be compared to him!

He's the one who said it; why fine a TV station for reporting the news? Oops, I forgot - it's the New World Order.

26. 1st amendment. He can say whatever he wants
it's the broadcasters that actually put it on the air.
Same as they didn't fine Janet Jackson, they fined the stations.

22. Hey ... you've got a great idea there ...
> I know quite a few pre-teens who think he is VERY uncool, and would

This could be the golden opportunity to improve the next generation:

"Study hard children or you might end up like George W. Bush"

"Cocaine? Just say 'No thanks, I'm smarter than the president'"

"Drunk again? Do you want to live in the White House or something?"

You could be America's saviour!

25. last year, my co-worker got her daughter to take music lessons ...
... in the summer, by pointing out that "The US President takes a whole month off and just lies around doing nothing" -- and besides, that Bush didn't know how to play any instruments when he was her age, so when his friends formed a band all he could do was stand there and clap in time to the music. (She pointed to this Washington Post article as evidence.)

23. People should not have to hear it
George is a dam good God fearing Christian and when he says shit he is referring to the kind that does not stink. The liberal media will take this completely out of context and make it sound like he is a malignant vulgar bastard with no Christian values. We dont want that to happen do we.:sarcasm:
