The U.S. ambassador to Turkey also said in a newspaper interview published Sunday that the United States could use military force to oust an estimated 5,000 Turkish Kurdish rebels hiding in northern Iraq.

Great we are going to piss off the one group of people who are happy that we are in Iraq

1. They intend to send Turkish troops
Edited on Sun Jul-20-03 10:06 PM by Sliverofhope
into the Kurdish area of Iraq? This would seem to be the strategic equivalent of sticking a finger in an electrical outlet. Unless they want to start a war in Turkey (is there oil there? - we could send 'peacekeepers' to guard oil pipelines), this proves we're dealing with some truly disturbed people.

2. I went to a Kurdish Cultural Celebration
a couple of weeks ago in Sunnyvale, CA. The people there said they were hopeful, but they had been betrayed before. Is this the betrayal they were afraid of?

4. Does this mean war between the Kurds and the Turks?
<<Robert Pearson, the U.S. ambassador to Turkey, told Hurriyet in an interview published Sunday that the United States would not allow the rebels to hide in northern Iraq and could use force to oust them.
''We don't want any threat against Turkey to remain in Iraq,'' Hurriyet quoted Pearson as saying.
''Either they surrender or face the alternative. The alternative is the use of military force.''>>

5. It's about credibility, stupid
The sound you hear is American credibility going down the drain, through the sewers and out the discharge pipe...

Divide and rule is going to be a lot harder elswhere if the Americans make a habit of extending the concept to equal 'divide, rule and sell-out.'

6. Why on earth would the Turks send troops
after the U.S. "punished" them by officially recognizing the Armenian genocide? That's a very sensitive issue over there. The Turks have consistently denied it.

7. a brilliant idea!
they know better than anyone in the Mideast about how to kill the Kurds and get away with it. Just the kind of service the occupation forces may need later! :eyes:
