U.S. unions seek federal probe of Miami police
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N03394317.htm

MIAMI, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The United States' largest trade union federation asked the federal attorney general on Wednesday to investigate alleged police abuses during protests against regional free trade talks in Miami last month.

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney wrote to Attorney-General John Ashcroft, saying police turned away busloads of retirees, sprayed peaceful protesters in the face with pepper spray, shot others with rubber bullets and pointed guns at people's heads.

He said the use of $8.5 million in federal funds, set aside for security at the Miami trade talks in an $87.5 billion bill for the reconstruction of Iraq, justified a federal investigation of the Miami police.

"This abuse at the hands of the Miami police is an insult to the American labor movement, and to all Americans who believe in the basic rights guaranteed by our Constitution," Sweeney said in a letter.

"Not since the days of the civil rights movement have I witnessed such outrageous and inexcusable behavior by police who are sworn to protect us."

2. Neither does John Ashcroft.
The only part of the Constitution they really fight for is the Second Amendment. I think they consider the rest a threat to their powers.

3. I applaud the union action, but they have little chance of satisfaction
Ashcroft will bury it and ignore it like he buried the Bushevik Anthrax Assassin "investigation" and the "investigation" into the Plame leaker.

In other words, the unions have a better chance of getting Himmler to investigate Heydrich in 1937 than Ashcroft in investigating his precious Imperial Sturmtruppen.

Good luck, Union guys. You'll need it.

4. Miami police abuse "an insult to the American labor movement"
AFL-CIO asks for investigation of police practices at FTAA
By CORALIE CARLSON, Associated Press
December 4, 2003

MIAMI -- The AFL-CIO asked Wednesday for federal and state investigations into police conduct at the protests outside the Free Trade Area of the Americas meeting last month.

A letter sent to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and Gov. Jeb Bush also asked the two leaders to prosecute those who abused civil liberties and called for the resignation of Miami Police Chief John Timoney. (snip)

(snip) Police blocked access to a union rally by "deploying armored personnel carriers, water cannons and scores of police in riot gear with clubs in front of the amphitheater entrance," according to the letter by AFL-CIO president John J. Sweeney.

A peaceful labor march of 8,000 to 10,000 demonstrators was cut off and police advanced on the protesters without provocation, the letter said. The crowd was not given a safe route to disperse and police used pepper spray and rubber bullets on people as they tried to leave, the letter said.

"This abuse at the hands of Miami police is an insult to the American labor movement, and to all Americans who believe in the basic rights guaranteed by our Constitution," Sweeney wrote. "Not since the days of the civil rights movement have I witnessed such outrageous and inexcusable behavior by the police who are sworn to protect us." (snip/...)
