How an American war hero is taking his battle over Iraq to Washington
Washington
05 December 2003

The left leg of retired Colonel David Hackworth still carries a bullet that he picked up while fighting in the Vietnam War. Wounded a total of eight times, he claims to be America's most highly decorated soldier, his chest weighed down by honours such as eight Purple Hearts, nine Silver Stars and eight Bronze Stars.

While no-one doubts Colonel Hackworth's patriotism or service to his country, there are plenty of people who do not appreciate what he has to say about the United States' occupation of Iraq and the way it was carried out. Donald Rumsfeld is likely to be among his critics: Colonel Hackworth, 72, described the US Defence Secretary as "an arrogant asshole".

1. Hack has turned more liberal over the last few years.
Right-wing stations used to ALWAYS invite him on, now, they've got no use for him. He was all for the Afghan war, but deadset against Iraq. He's now on the freepers shit-list.

5. The freepers really went crazy ....
... when he wrote a nice article about Clark (it is in the issue of Maxim magazine with Jessica Alba on the cover). Hackworth called Clark "a perfumed prince" before he met him. The freepers went loved that, but then Hack met Clark and they discussed the war in Kosovo. Hack realized he had blamed Clark for a lot of bonehead moves that Cohen advocated and which Clark tried to fight (part of the reason Cohen and Shelton relieved Clark of the NATO command early). Hackworth went on Hannity and Colmes and praised Clark after he met him. Old Sean DID NOT LIKE THAT. They haven't had Hack on Fox since. He failed to tow the line ....

3. Eyewitness account of Samarra battle
Thanks drdarwin. Article includes a US soldier's account of Samarra, saying most casualties were....civilians. I was hoping to get more on that story. Hope he gives 'em hell in Washington.

6. great story...
I agree every war has been spun, but in the information age there is so much available to us that the spinners just end up looking like fools. Except to the Sheepublicans.

8. I wonder.
If we're talking quality, Smedley Butler had two CMOH's, and a buncha others.

Talking quantity, I think Hack's were audited over this claim (?) and it stood up.

Although arguing who's got the biggest fruit salad really ain't where its at, I guess. (As opposed to, say, arguing as to who should receive the CIB.)
