West will fail in 'war on terror' without Pakistan: Musharraf
LONDON (AFP) - The United States and its allies will fail in the so-called "war on terror" without the support of Pakistan and its intelligence service, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has said.

In an interview with BBC radio, Musharraf was asked for his response to the view that Pakistan was not a good ally in the fight against global extremism because of the links between terrorism and his country.

"You will be brought down to your knees if Pakistan doesn't co-operate with you. That is all that I would like to say. Pakistan is the main ally. If we were not with you, you would not manage anything. Let that be clear," he said.

"And if the ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) is not with you, you will fail. Let that be very clear also. Remember my words: if the ISI is not with you and Pakistan is not with you will lose in Afghanistan."

5. We're going to fail anyway. The war on terror is just a means to
an end for the creeps running our country. The real war is against the American people. Let's face it, if the ISI hadn't been the one to give Muhammad Atta the $100,000 for 9-11, it probably wouldn't have happened. Pakistan is in a neat position to help * continue this "war" for ever.

10. Worth repeating: ISI HEAD ORDERED $100,000 SENT TO MOHAMMED ATTA!

October 7, 2001: ISI Director Replaced at US Urging; Role in Funding 9/11 Plot Is One Explanation ISI Director Lt. Gen. Mahmood Ahmed is replaced in the face of US pressure after links are discovered between him, Saeed Sheikh, and the funding of the 9/11 attacks. Mahmood instructed Saeed to transfer $100,000 into hijacker Mohamed Atta’s bank account prior to 9/11. This is according to Indian intelligence, which claims the FBI has privately confirmed the story. The story is not widely reported in Western countries, though it makes the Wall Street Journal. It is reported in Pakistan as well. The Northern Alliance also repeats the claim in late October. In Western countries, the usual explanation is that Mahmood is fired for being too close to the Taliban. The Times of India reports that Indian intelligence helped the FBI discover the link, and says, “A direct link between the ISI and the WTC attack could have enormous repercussions. The US cannot but suspect whether or not there were other senior Pakistani Army commanders who were in the know of things. Evidence of a larger conspiracy could shake US confidence in Pakistan’s ability to participate in the anti-terrorism coalition.” There is evidence some ISI officers may have known of a plan to destroy the WTC as early as July 1999. Two other ISI leaders, Lt. Gen. Mohammed Aziz Khan and Lt. Gen. Muzaffar Usmani, are sidelined on the same day as Mahmood. Saeed had been working under Khan. The firings are said to have purged the ISI of its fundamentalists. However, according to one diplomat, “To remove the top two or three doesn’t matter at all. The philosophy remains. ... a parallel government of its own. If you go through the officer list, almost all of the ISI regulars would say, of the Taliban, ‘They are my boys.’” It is believed Mahmood has been living under virtual house arrest in Pakistan (which would seem to imply more than just a difference of opinion over the Taliban), but no charges have been brought against him, and there is no evidence the US has asked to question him. He also has refused to speak to reporters since being fired , and outside India and Pakistan, the story has only been mentioned infrequently in the media since. He will reemerge as a businessman in 2003, but still will not speak to the media (see July 2003).

Yes, we need ISI to fight the War on Terror, but in ways that Musharref is not completely forthright about. Then again, neither was the 9/11 Commission, which omitted this fact from its report.

7. Doesn't matter. A 'War on Terror' is idiiotic. It's meaningless.
Simply a way to sell war toys, invade countries, murder their citizens and steal their stuff. Just like the equally meaningless 'War on Communism' and the 'War on Drugs', etc.

9. Fine. BOMB THEM.
I am tired of this prick. He is harboring bin Laden and telling Americans to be grateful about it. Fuck em.

Tell em they have 60 days to produce him, and if they don't produce him, begin carpet bombing of the border provinces, and drop a guided missile near Mushie, just as a wakeup call. Then, watch for bin Laden squeaking out of the country, likely back into Afghanistan.

I don't like such tactics, but we are being taunted by an enemy in our midst. This pig was at our White House, refusing to answer questions to our press while shopping a book deal paid to him by an American publisher. We should remind him our use for him is singular. Produce bin Laden and other high value Al Qaeda members, or die sooner.

Remember this loser lead a military coup against a democratically elected woman, the first in the Muslim world, if I am not mistaken.

12. In point of fact, the coup was against Nawaz Sherif, a man
who was quite Western-oriented and democratically-elected. Pakistan was much better off under Sherif, no question.

I believe you are referring to Benazir Bhutto, and she was a piece of work herself.

14. Musharraf Blasts "Ungrateful" West
The United States and its allies will fail in the so-called "war on terror" without the support of Pakistan and its intelligence service, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf said Saturday, September 30.

In a collection of memoirs entitled "In the Line of Fire," Musharraf further said that US intelligence has paid Pakistan millions of dollars for handing over Al-Qaeda suspects it has captured. "We have captured 689 and handed over 369 to the United States. We have earned bounties totalling millions of dollars," Musharraf says in his book, which was released on Monday.

Instead of coddling this military dictator who protects bin Laden.

I am so sick of our "allies" being Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. There are not two nations more responsible for 9/11, save for Afghanistan.

16. Hmmm...bounties, eh? So how do we know they were
really Al-Qaeda? Did they "confess" to it under Torture? Good!

Now we'll take them, hold them incommunicado for 4 or 5 years. No need to justify the detention to anyone, since we've removed their right to seek a writ of habeas corpus. After we've tortured them some more and gotten more "reliable" info from them, we'll charge them with something, haul them before a military tribunal, and use their "reliable" confessions to convict them. Serves them right. We can't mollycoddle the enemy.

20. "We have captured 689 and handed over 369 to the United States.
Musharraf, in an interview with CBS "60 Minutes" last week, dropped a bombshell, saying that the United States blackmailed Pakistan by threatening to bomb it "back to the Stone Age" after the September 11, 2001 attacks unless it supported the war on terror.

"Those who habitually accuse us of 'not doing enough' in the war on terror should simply ask the CIA how much prize money it has paid to the government of Pakistan," he says, without specifying where the money came from.

Like India, this region can emerge pro-West with secular constitutions.......

The very best analyst on Pakistan right now.....is Frederic Grare at the Carnegie Endowment:

30. This is the same MFer that stated that he "war-gamed" the U.S.
Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 09:34 PM by arewenotdemo
post 9/11.

And now he's stating that "you will be brought down to your knees if Pakistan (and the ISI) doesn't co-operate with you"?????????????????

I don't know what part of Pakistan or Mars this MFer was born on, but if the ISI director General Mahmoud Ahmad directed Saeed Sheikh to send Atta $100,000, as has been charged, there is a very good chance that Musharraf knew about it.

Do the Indians have to connect all the fucking dots for us? Musharraf's arrogance is so amazing he may as well be American...or Al Qaedan.

32. Musharraf needs to cooperate
Musharraf is an ally to us, but how much of an ally is the question. I think he realizes that he rather be with us then against. If I was the leader of pakistan and a fully loaded U.S. army is right next door I would cooperate too.

I think he does realize the threat of radical islam. Hopefully it stays that way.

33. Break the country up....nature has been trying to do it since 1947.

There is nothing Musharraf can do to placate the rise of fundamentalist Islam within Pakstan unless he is willing to peacefully negotiate a redrawing of the state of Pakistan.

He and the Pakistan ethos, are very much at the center of radical Islam in his region.
