GOP Leaders Dismiss Idea Of Doing More About Foley
E-Mail Raised 'Red Flag' With Parents

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert and other GOP leaders are dismissing suggestions that they should have done more to investigate an e-mail from Rep. Mark Foley to a former teenage page that had raised a "red flag" with the boy's parents and his congressional sponsor.

Hastert rejected a call by a leading conservative newspaper that he resign, a spokesman said Tuesday.

"The speaker has and will lead the Republican conference to another majority in the 110th Congress," said Hastert spokesman Ron Bonjean.

Hastert said his top aides and Rep. John Shimkus, a fellow Illinois Republican overseeing the page program, acted appropriately by trying to resolve the matter as an internal GOP problem rather than mounting a more formal investigation that would have involved Democrats.

1. The GOP has been caught with their pants down on this issue.
They will not be able to dismiss it, as long as it remains a headline. Be on the lookout for more distractions: terra, gay marriage, etc. You know what to look for. It's an old tactic, and I'm hoping it isn't going to work this time.

2. "...that would have involved Democrats."
So tere it is folks. They didn't want to politicize the issue. The GOP would rather sweep it under the carpet, endangering children, than stop it because the Democrats would find out!

This is "hugh".

3. Hastert's statement saying they tried to resolve the matter....
internally means he is admitting he knew about it before the story broke. He claims he was never told.

8. I give Fat Denny Hastert two weeks max before he changes his tune.

I don't know that he will actually resign. But the knives are being sharpened in the Republican House Districts and those members aren't going to take a dive for Denny once they get back there and start getting cut up by the "Base".

13. If Fat Denny's not careful he's going to get stressed and blow a
gasket.

Then again, that could be entertaining. Heart attack? Massive stroke? Couldn't happen to a nicer, more deserving guy.

11. How about the people who are running to save their seats?
Ya think they aren't telling Denny he's gotta go? You think they won't go public if he doesn't?

Boehart has changed his tune (AGAIN). He initially said he told
Denny early, then called the post and said he didn't remember talking to Denny after all. Now, he suddenly remembers he did tell him.

Why? Because initially Denny leaned on him. Now, with the rest of the Repugs, he's running far and fast from Denny...to save his own skin, and also becaue he knows Denny has no support, so he can say what he wants, with no consequences.

12. Republicans are hoping the Foley story will die down
They figure to lay low until after the election, not wanting to draw any more attention to their failings. For that reason Hasturd will stay on until mid-November. Then he will decide to resign the Speakership IMO.

Meanwhile Foley's lawyer has said that he will come out of rehab in 30 days and will then appear before the press to make some statement and answer questions. That will be just a few days before the election which should remind people of this scandal. Of course he might just "disappear" instead.....
