Judge throws out citizenship voting rule

By JOE MILICIA
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

CLEVELAND -- A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a voting rule
that required naturalized citizens in Ohio to provide proof of their
citizenship if challenged by a poll worker.

A group of naturalized citizens, backed by the state chapter of the
American Civil Liberties Union, sued in August, alleging the law singled
out one group of citizens and placed an unfair burden on them.

Secretary of State Ken Blackwell agreed that the rule was unconstitutional
and did not challenge the lawsuit at a court hearing Wednesday.

Judge Christopher Boyko said the rule raised concerns of profiling and
would hurt turnout among naturalized citizens.

9. In Ohio, you'll need either a drivers license or other picture ID or a
SS card, or a utilities bill statement. You can always vote by absontee ballot. If you don't have any of these, I'm pretty sure you can sign a statement which swears that you are who you say you are and that you are eligible to vote in that precinct and election. Lieing about any of the above is a fifth degree felony.

11. I hope the Democratic party gets this message
out to the people. Not everyone is going to arrive at the polls with one of those items. I personally plan to vote absentee and I read earlier that the repubs sent everyone regitered as a puke an absentee ballot request form. The dems only made phone calls telling people about the absentee program. I have a feeling a lot of would be Dem votes are going to be turned away this year because not everyone will be aware of the new rules.
