U.S. Navy medic admits role in Iraqi murder case
CAMP PENDLETON, California (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy medic admitted on Friday to participating in the kidnapping of an Iraqi civilian but avoided murder charges in a plea deal in which he agreed to testify about his own role and that of seven Marines in the Iraqi's death.

Petty Officer Melson Bacos, 21, and the seven Marines he accompanied on an April patrol were charged with seizing Hashim Ibrahim Awad, 52, from his home, killing him and placing an AK-47 assault rifle and shovel next to his body to suggest he wanted to plant a roadside bomb.

A Purple Heart recipient with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Bacos was the first to plead guilty for his role in the Hamdania case. The murder was one in a series of incidents in which the conduct of American troops in Iraq have hurt the country' image worldwide.

1. What were they thinking?
What possessed them to do such an evil thing, I wonder? They really need to spend the rest of their lives in prison.

4. Iraq murder case witness: "I knew what we were doing was wrong
LINDA DEUTSCH
Associated Press

... "I knew what we were doing was wrong. I tried to say something and then I decided to look away," the 21-year-old Navy medic from Franklin, Wis., said Friday as he pleaded guilty to kidnapping and conspiracy charges in the death of Hashim Ibrahim Awad ...

"I felt I couldn't stop it any more that day. They were going to do it. They were going to carry out the plan, so I continued on," he said ...

"Why didn't I just walk away?" Bacos asked before being sentenced. "The answer to that question was I wanted to be part of the team. I wanted to be a respected corpman, but that is no excuse for immorality." ...

"I witnessed Sgt. Hutchins dead check the man and fire three rounds into the man's head," Bacos testified. "Then Cpl. Thomas fired seven to 10 rounds into the man's chest." ...
