First-time candidate leads in Houston mayor's race
First-time candidate leads in Houston mayor's race
By MICHAEL GRACZYK Associated Press Writer
December 5, 2003

HOUSTON- A former state Democratic leader held a big lead in the polls going into Saturday's runoff in the most expensive mayoral contest Houston has ever seen.

Though the race is officially nonpartisan, a victory by real estate millionaire Bill White would give the Democrats a rare victory in President Bush's home state. Cuban-born Orlando Sanchez, a Republican former councilman, is seeking to become Houston's first Hispanic mayor.

White topped eight other candidates in last month's election, but with only 38 percent of vote, he fell short of the majority needed to win the mayor's post outright. Sanchez finished second with 33 percent.

The winner succeeds Lee Brown, barred by term limits from seeking a fourth two-year term. (snip/...)

3. I met Bill White this summer
and was impressed. He will make a good mayor of Houston, and hopefully go on to help rebuild the Democratic party in Texas.

9. Last election "Black beats Cuban in Houston"
Mayor Brown had been far from perfect but he beat Orlando Sanchez last time by a narrow margin. One might have been non-impressed with the nightmarish, unending road projects (Houston traffic is generally bad enough) but Bar & George Bush smiling at you from an "Elect Sanchez" leaflet was enough to remind you that he was, after all, a Republican. (Mayor & Council have term limits in Houston.)

While we have people from all over the Spanish-speaking world here in Houston, the Cubans do not dominate that community. Mexican-Americans are the majority, whether they just got here or their ancestors crossed the River while mine were still stumbling through the bogs. Most of them are darker than the green-eyed Sanchez & most of them are Democrats.

10. tee hee......I remember the former First criminals doing a lot
of PR for Sanchez. I thought the Wonder Monkey also threw his banana behind him.......still didn't sway the voters......and if I remember correctly Lee Brown wasn't exactly a welcome sight at the time.

Thanks Houston!
