No outsourcing today: Strike closes India's tech center
October 10, 2006 (Network World) -- Political strife led to a shutdown Oct. 4 of most major outsourcing companies in Bangalore, the heart of India's business community.

The 12-hour strike closed most offices of Indian outsourcing giants Infosys and WiProand also affected work at IBM, Intel and EDS.

In Bangalore life basically was shut down -- public transportation, schools and most stores closed -- but the business of outsourcing continued, either by having work shifted to other locales or by telecommuting, reports say. Many companies say they asked workers to work weekend shifts to replace the lost hours.

The strike involved a decades-old boundary dispute between Karnataka, the Indian state where Bangalore is located, and neighboring Maharashtra.

4. Are you sure?
I asked a friend of mine from India if there were unions and he was like "no, are you kidding?" I would think it would be hard to put together in a country that's overpopulated.

Labor unions have a lot of strength in India. In fact, that's the reason many multinationals stayed away for so many years.

But the strikes that occured are not labor related. These strikes were related to a state border dispute.

12. Population is irrelevant......
So there are many unskilled illiterate people. That does not automatically increased the skilled jobs. There are plenty of unions in in India historically. Like the Railway workers, Teachers, communications, electric, etc. And they are well known for striking.

2. That's what you get when you take advantage of other countries' poverty.
You get the cheap labor but you get all the baggage as well.

10. Did we also outsource the AFL-CIO?
Now India can strike for us! This is great! When we aren't getting paid enough for those jobs we no longer have
we can have people in other countries strike for us! They can do the marching. They can stay up late at night
painting the signs. We Americans can just lay around basking in that trickle down sunshine enjoying the financial scraps the
corporate elite cast our way. Ah, this is the good life.
