Militia Attack Ignites US Ammo Dump in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Militiamen firing mortars detonated a U.S. ammunition dump in Baghdad on Tuesday night, sparking a barrage of explosions that continued to shake the capital on Wednesday morning, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Residents said the blasts were reminiscent of the aerial bombardment of Baghdad that preceded the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

A mortar round fired from the Abu Dsheer area of southern Baghdad caused the fire in an ammunition holding area in Camp Falcon, a forward operating base for U.S. troops, that ignited tank, artillery and small-arms ammunition, the spokesman said.

"Intelligence indicates that civilians aligned with a militia organization were responsible for last night's mortar attack," said Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Withington, spokesman for the U.S. 4th Infantry Division.

1. "civilians aligned with a militia organization" are blamed
Yeah, Iraqi civilians are getting tired of watching 655,000 of their people being slaughtered, raped and tortured.

They have no appreciation for the freedom and democracy Bush has brought to their country along with the amusing puppet Al-Maliki.:sarcasm:

10. The Iraqi civilians seem to be "tolerating" the 655,000 deaths very
well.

4. Not hard when you have spotters inside the wire walking the mortar
fire into the target or civilian contractors giving out intelligence before hand.

14. I witnessed the "Big Blow" of the Cam Ranh Bay ammo dump in 1971.
It was spectacular. A battalion of VC sappers hit the ammo dump at about 3 am. When the ordnance started cooking off, we got a case of beer and sat on the top of our bunker on the Navy Air Facility side the field and watched the fireworks. At about 4 am the first of twenty-one 15,000 bombs blew. The flash and the mushroom cloud made us think it was a tactical nuke. The resulting shock wave knocked me flat on my back on top of the bunker. Needless to say, we then got into the bunker for the duration (about 6 hours).
A few months earlier I had witnessed the blowing of the Cam Ranh P.O.L. dump (petroleum, oil, and lubricants). Again, VC at 3 am.

18. #1 Boeing 727 electrical system gouge: PROTECT ESSENTIAL!
#1 Sandman Lounge (Cam Ranh Bay NAF) gouge: PROTECT THE BREWSKI!

(The party continued in the bunker. One brave soul dashed back into the Sandman Lounge for another case of beer at about 6am.)

16. I remember reading that some of our troops blew up a large Nazi
ammo dump in North Africa. Later, when one of their indigenous Arabic spies came back from visiting the new site, set up in its place, they were astonished to see him hysterical with laughter - as he was normally a very dour character.

The reason, he told them, was that he'd seen they'd posted a lot of "No Smoking" signs.

19. On January 31, 1968
Charlie dropped a 122mm rocket into the air base ammo dump at Chu Lai.

Earlier that evening, a convoy of 21 S&Ps (flatbed trucks) arrived too late to properly disperse - they were all parked together. The explosions picked up a coupla F-4s (29,500 pounds empty, 58,000 pounds loaded) and tossed them thru hangers. I was about 2 miles away from the dump & the blast knocked me down. China Beach was covered in burned gunpowder for miles and miles.

I can only imagine what folks in Baghdad are going through.

The MSM continues to show a studied lack of interest in this story. The fundy islamic sites are claiming all sorts of wild things. What's a fellow to think?
