ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Akron, Ohio-based Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will lay off 330 hourly employees and reduce wire production at its Asheboro plant because of ongoing labor disputes with unionized workers at other facilities.
The temporary layoffs, the first since the Asheboro plant opened in 1983, will begin Friday and could last until striking workers at 16 unionized plants in the U.S. and Canada return to work, Goodyear spokeswoman Amy Brei said in a written statement Tuesday.
"It is expected that the employees will be recalled once the strike is over and tire production returns to normal levels," Brei said.
More than 12,000 union members walked off the job Oct. 5. The United Steelworkers union and Goodyear had tried unsuccessfully since July to reach a labor deal.
